Chelsea is delighted to announce that Lauren James has signed a new contract until 2030.
The news comes on the same day her brother and men’s team captain Reece agreed a new long-term contract with the club.
Having trained in the Chelsea Academy from Under-10 to Under-14 level, Lauren later signed for the Blues as a professional at the start of the 2021/22 campaign.
She has since made 105 appearances and scored 31 goals for the club, winning the Women’s Super League title in each of her four full seasons and adding three Women’s FA Cup trophies and a Women’s League Cup triumph to her list of honours.
Lauren said: 'I’m really happy and over the moon to have signed a new contract with Chelsea. It’s been my club since I was young, so I’m really pleased to have extended my stay here. I can’t wait to make more memories, hopefully have more success and win more trophies with this amazing club.'
Chelsea Women's CEO Aki Mandhar said: ‘We are delighted that Lauren is extending her contract. Lauren is one of the most technically gifted players this country has produced, and Chelsea through and through.
'Everyone connected to the club is extremely proud of everything she has achieved in blue and we’re looking forward to the next chapter of her journey.’
Returning to Chelsea from Manchester United in the summer of 2021, Lauren’s Chelsea debut came the following November in a UEFA Women’s Champions League game against Swiss side Servette.
Her first goal was scored in a 9-0 win over Leicester City later that season, and she made 12 appearances during her maiden campaign as we claimed a league and FA Cup double.
Her performances did not go unnoticed, and England head coach Sarina Wiegman handed Lauren her Lionesses debut against Austria in a Women’s World Cup qualifier on 3 September 2022.
That season, 2022/23, saw Lauren win the WSL Goal of the Month award in February for a wonderful solo run and finish in a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur – and we secured league and FA Cup double for the second consecutive campaign.
Upon the conclusion of that campaign, Lauren signed a new long-term contract with the club and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
The following season, 2023/24, our talented forward established herself as one of the best players in the women's game. She scored 16 goals in 23 starts – including a first-ever hat-trick against Liverpool – as the Blues once again secured the WSL title.
Individual accolades followed. She won the WSL Player of the Month awards for November and January, was named in the FIFPRO Women’s World XI, the PFA WSL Team of the Year, and was crowned as the Chelsea Women’s Player of the Year.
As a new era began under Sonia Bompastor, Lauren was voted in 13th place in the Ballon d’Or in September 2024, and she was once again included in the FIFPRO Women’s World XI.
Two separate injury layoffs did not stop the Chelsea No.10 from being influential in our domestic Treble; she scored key goals across all three competitions and put in a sublime performance in our brilliant comeback win against Manchester City in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final second leg.
Lauren battled back to fitness to play in the Women’s European Championship in Switzerland and impressed with a stunning goal against the Netherlands before adding a second in that match during the group stage of the competition.
This season, she passed the 100-appearance mark when coming on as a substitute in our 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Women’s League Cup semi-final and scored with an exceptional finish in our 2-0 victory over Liverpool at Kingsmeadow in February.
Everyone at Chelsea is delighted for Lauren and we wish her every success during the next phase of her career with the Blues.
Congratulations, Lauren!
