Levi Colwill says it was mission accomplished in Atlanta after our 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC, but the centre-back believes there is more to come from the Blues after our opening game in the Club World Cup

After Pedro Neto’s first-half strike gave us the lead at the interval, the Blues had to remain alert to dispel any opposition opportunities in the second period, and we eventually doubled our advantage through Enzo Fernandez, with the Argentine finishing from Liam Delap’s cross.

Levi, who was part of the Blues defence that secured a clean sheet, felt that although the performance wasn’t perfect, it was an accomplished display and meant we departed the Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the full complement of points.

‘The most important thing was to get the win and that’s what we have done,’ Colwill opened. ‘We picked and chose our moments where we could attack and where we could keep the ball. It wasn’t the perfect performance, but in tournament football, you just need to win.

‘We’re coming up against different teams and that will be a huge challenge, but we’re going to enjoy it and learn different things. The tournament has kicked off, and our focus is on the next game now.’

Colwill knew that if he helped establish the platform for the attackers - through solid defensive output - to succeed, then our forwards would do the rest.

‘To take a clean sheet is the most important thing for the defenders,’ he continued.

‘You know we’ve got amazing attackers and they always score goals. So for us defenders in the team, we need to keep clean sheets to win games. And of course they had their chances, but hopefully next game we can minimise them.’

The 22-year-old also praised the impact of our newest arrivals, with Delap claiming an assist and Dario Essugo looking bright in their first competitive appearances for the Blues.

He added: ‘They are all top lads and they all have really good personalities and I think that’s the most important thing. I think everyone, including the fans, will see that they’re amazing players and they’re here for a reason – to help the team.’
