It was a special moment at Anfield as Levi Colwill made his first start for the Blues this season after battling a lengthy injury lay-off, with the defender playing a vital role during our 1-1 draw with Liverpool.
Chelsea came back from a goal down on Merseyside as, between Enzo Fernandez and Wes Fofana, the Blues levelled the game before the break. In the second half, both sides came close to finding the all-important winner – Cole Palmer even had a goal ruled out for offside – but the spoils were shared in the end.
First, on the game, Levi was pleased with the Blues’ performance and felt we were owed more than what we secured, highlighting the impressive team display defensively at Anfield.
‘We played some really good football, and we deserved three points, but that’s the way football goes,’ Levi opened, speaking after the contest. ‘It’s a good stepping stone to take to the Manchester City game, and go to Wembley and win.
‘Defensively, apart from conceding early, I thought we were immense. The back four, the goalkeeper, Moi [Caicedo] helping us out – the whole team were great. We defended together, stuck together, fought, and I think you saw that today.’
It has been a long road to recovery for Levi, with the centre-back working tirelessly behind the scenes alongside the medical staff at Cobham to return to full fitness before the season’s close.
Although the defender admitted it’s been a ‘tough’ journey, Levi feels he’s all the better for it, thanking the entire club for their support along the way.
Colwill said: ‘It’s been really tough, but my team-mates have been amazing with me. The staff, too – I couldn’t have asked for anything better. They’ve put me in the best way to come back and be strong and good, and hopefully it goes on that way.
‘It’s all down to the staff, the physios, they have all looked after me well, and I can’t give them enough flowers. They’ve really helped me.
‘On the pitch, when you miss football that much, and you get back out there, you just want to do everything for the team, and I think it’s a humbling reminder that anything can happen and you can’t take anything for granted.'
While also acknowledging his improvement on the pitch, Levi also pointed out his development off the pitch as a person.
‘Everyone keeps telling me I’ve grown!’ he said. ‘I feel stronger, mentally stronger – all that hard work has helped me. I’m a better player and person for going through that, and I think you could see that on the pitch today. I feel more mature, and I’m just trying to help everyone as much as I can.
‘It was amazing being out there. Before the game, I had no nerves. I was just excited walking onto the pitch. With all the hard work I’ve put in, I was just happy to be outside.’
And after securing a well-earned point, it’s fair to say Levi was delighted to get back in front of the Chelsea supporters and thank them for their support.
Colwill added: ‘It was amazing [to see the supporters at the end]. I’ve waited eight or nine months to do that. It’s just like reconnecting with them, and I wanted to show my love.’
