No player wants to enter an international break – let alone one that lasts for three weeks – on the back of a defeat. Yet Levi Colwill believes those remaining with the Blues must use it as an opportunity to 'become a better team' under Xabi Alonso.
The opening weeks of the campaign have brought contrasting emotions for Chelsea players, staff and supporters alike. Entertaining victories have been recorded while progress has been made in the Carabao Cup, but there have also been disappointing defeats.
Friday night's trip to Brentford was one of the latter. Alonso's side started well at the Gtech Community Stadium and controlled the opening 45 minutes, yet things unravelled in the second period as the Bees struck three times without reply.
After our opening five top-flight matches, the Blues have claimed seven points. Naturally, that leaves room for improvement, which Colwill is acutely aware of.
The 23-year-old, who missed most of last season due to a knee injury, has not been included in the England squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. It means he will remain with the Blues and continue working with Alonso during the international break, something he is not taking for granted.
When asked to reflect on our start to the campaign, and the improvements we can make, the Academy graduate said: '[There have been] some good bits, some other not so good bits.
'Luckily we’ve got a while now to try and improve. Hopefully, we will come out the other side flying, pick up our play, and become a better team.'
