Levi Colwill says the Blues' perceived underdog status going into the Club World Cup final motivated the players to prove people wrong and continue the Chelsea tradition of making history and lifting silverware.
After Paris Saint-Germain claimed UEFA Champions League victory by brushing Inter Milan aside in this season’s final, then record a thumping 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the semi-finals of this competition, many outside of Chelsea were pointing to the French team as heavy favourites.
It was a common occurrence in the build-up to the final in New Jersey to hear Enzo Maresca and his players asked by the media whether they thought Chelsea would be able to counter the team they regarded as the best in the world.
Well, at the final whistle in the MetLife Stadium, it was the Blues who were officially crowned as world champions and, given the self-belief the team took into the game, Colwill insists that pre-match talk only gave them more motivation to prove they were a match for any opponent.
‘Of course they’re an amazing team with amazing players, but we know how good we are and we came into the game confident,’ Colwill underlined.
‘There were a lot of people doubting us out there and it just helped us, gave us that fire, and when we were out there we gave it everything. We’re over the moon to not only win but to get a clean sheet and to be the champions of the world.
‘The media helped us a bit. Everyone was doubting us, asking how are we going to keep their players quiet, how are we going to not lose against PSG? It was a bit like: “Wait a minute, no one respects us”. We used it against them, it definitely helped us.’
As well as firing the players up for the final, that also seemed to leave the Blues squad with the feeling of having nothing to lose. They certainly appeared the more determined to take the game by the scruff of the neck from the first kick, with a desire to give everything they had left in the tank for one last big push at the end of a long campaign.
‘Our confidence grew with every win and we kept building on that,’ continued the defender. ‘Anything can happen in tournament football, and we believed in that.
‘Confidence was growing and we just took it one game at a time, that’s why we did so well at the tournament and in the final. Before the game, we were all talking and saying we believe in ourselves. At the start of the game, we set the tone straight away, pressing high.
‘We knew it was our last game of football for the season, so there was no way we were going to go away on holiday and sit there thinking: “I wish I had given that little bit more for the team”. I told everyone that before, and we went out there and gave everything. That’s what the scoreline reflects and it's why we won.’
Colwill concluded by reflecting on what it means to have written a new chapter in the history of this club, as adding the UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup trophies to our cabinet over the last couple of months ensures our supporters can once again proudly claim: ‘we’ve won it all’!
‘It's what Chelsea do,’ said the Academy graduate, who has been at the club since Under-9s level. ‘Chelsea win, it’s as simple as that!
‘It’s huge to win another trophy. For the fans firstly, they’ve got bragging rights over every single club in the world now. Nobody can tell them they haven’t won this; they’ve won everything. That’s the main thing.
‘Also, going into the new season and the Champions League, hopefully our confidence will be high and we can go rolling in, trying to win every game possible. That was the aim at the start of this season and that’s the aim for the new season. Take it game by game and try to win every game.
‘That’s the mindset you’ve got to have when you’re a Chelsea player. We all believe in it and hopefully we can do wonderful things next season.’
