It was a special evening for Lexi Potter as the Academy graduate marked her first WSL start by scoring a maiden goal for the Blues to secure victory against Brighton & Hove Albion. It’s fair to say the midfielder was overcome with joy.
The Blues moved up to second in the Women’s Super League after an important victory over the Seagulls at Kingsmeadow. Alyssa Thompson opened the scoring, heading home from close range, before Brighton levelled against the run of play through Carla Camacho.
However, ahead of the interval, Lexi fired the Blues into the lead again after placing the ball into the far corner from inside the box, wheeling away to celebrate her first senior goal on her first start for the Blues, as we went on to secure the 2-1 win.
Speaking after the game, the 19-year-old was clearly delighted, highlighting her long-term connection with the Blues, having joined aged eight.
‘I’m really happy because I've been at the club for such a long time, so I’m really happy to help the team out and get the win,’ Potter opened.
‘I was really excited when I was told [I was going to start]. I’ve been at the club a really long time, so to score my first goal – I’m really happy! It was a great performance from the girls, and it was really good today.’
Delving into the contest, Lexi praised the determined performance of the Blues, particularly in the second half, as Brighton searched for a late equaliser.
‘On the whole, it was good to get the win,’ she continued.
‘In the first half, we had a bit more of the ball, and we were playing really good football. I think in the second half, they came out and tried to throw everything at it to get a goal back, and I think we defended really well and saw the game out.’
Lexi also had a message for you, the supporters, highlighting how important your backing is as we enter this crucial period of the season.
Potter added: ‘Thank you so much! We hear you, and we really appreciate your support, so please keep turning up [for us].’
