It’s been a sparkling end to 2025 for Chelsea academy graduate Lexi Potter, who came through the ranks at Cobham after joining the club at the age of eight.
Now 19 years old, she made her Blues debut on 15 October in a 4-0 Women’s Champions League match against Paris FC at Stamford Bridge, replacing Sandy Baltimore as a 73rd-minute substitute.
Two further appearances off the bench followed in a pair of two 6-0 wins over St Polten in Austria and Roma back at Stamford Bridge. The youngster’s confidence was growing, and her performances made it clear she was knocking on the door to make her first-ever start for Chelsea.
Head coach Sonia Bompastor agreed, and after the win over St Polten, explained that she was looking to find more ways to integrate the talented youngster into the first team. That promise was made good in the final match of 2025, as Bompastor named Potter in the starting XI against Liverpool in our Women’s League Cup quarter-final.
The midfielder performed so well against Liverpool that she remained on the pitch for the entirety of the 9-1 win, and afterwards explained how she felt about making her long-awaited first start for Chelsea.
‘I’ve been at the club a long time, so I was really excited, and a little bit nervous!’ smiled Potter. ‘It was a great experience, and I’m really grateful for the opportunity.’
A look at the stats from the match highlights how the occasion did not overawe the youngster. In fact, it was quite the opposite as she completed 87 per cent of her 46 total passes, and won the ball back from the opposition on seven occasions.
With the future looking bright for Potter – who spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace in the WSL – she is now looking forward to what 2026 might bring.
‘It’s important to reset, refocus and recover during the break and come back in the new year sharp,’ she explained. ‘We are clear on what our goals and ambitions are, so all we need is to be ready to go.’
