Liam Rosenior is certain of the quality that the Blues possess against any type of defence, and he is hopeful we can show that when we head to Crystal Palace later this afternoon.

Our head coach has been encouraged by many aspects of his side’s recent performances, with the Blues having scored 10 goals in the four games since Rosenior was appointed, and he believes the foundations are in place for us to consistently break down opponents, regardless of their approach.

Rosenior praised the work rate and mentality exhibited by his forwards, including Liam Delap, a striker he knows well from his time at Hull City, but highlighted the challenges faced by the attack when coming up against well-organised defences.

‘For Liam, he's had a stop-start season in terms of injuries,’ he said, speaking during his pre-match press conference ahead of our contest against Crystal Palace.

‘You need to have a flow, especially as a nine, in terms of your timing, in terms of your positioning. I was delighted for him to score against Fulham. I know what an outstanding player he is.

‘Not just here, I've heard many coaches and managers speak about the difficulty of playing against low-block defences. It's hard for any striker to find space in those moments. I thought our performance was very good in terms of the dominance and control against Pafos.

‘If a team, and no disrespect to what Pafos did – credit to them with the way that they played – play with nine men in the box, it's very difficult to find space for anyone, so we will work on that.

‘As I've said, I haven't had much time with the group. We're trying to do as many individual and unit meetings as possible, but there were a lot of good things that Liam did in the game in terms of his energy to press and his positioning. We just need to keep improving and analyse just to improve what we're doing.’

Specifically focusing on the Eagles, Rosenior recognises that the current FA Cup holders won’t be an easy side to break down, but knows that with the quality of his squad and his attacking options, we can find a way to unlock Oliver Glasner’s side.

Oliver is a very, very good coach,’ he continued. ‘They've been so well organised for 18 months, and they've had great success. Playing against low blocks, sometimes a coach can only do so much. It's down to the players.

‘You can position your players in certain ways, you can get timing, you can hit the ball towards certain locations in the box, but it comes down to quality. Football is about the quality of your players.

‘Why I'm so happy with this group is because I think I have the quality here that can unlock low blocks or high pressing teams or whatever it is that we come up against. It's just giving them the tools to do that.’

Rosenior believes one player who could be key is Estevao Willian, expressing his confidence in the Brazilian and our other attacking players who can occupy the wide areas.

‘For sure, Estevao's a scary talent,’ he added. ‘Unfortunately for him, the last week he's been ill. So for me, it's brilliant that he trained on Friday fully, and the same for Jamie [Gittens]. You have to make sure that you put the players in the best conditions to perform.

‘Estevao and Jamie have the ability, and Alejandro Garnacho and Pedro Neto have outstanding qualities, whether it's against high-pressing teams or the teams that defend deep. It's about giving them the confidence in the right environments, so they can go and perform.’
