Liam Rosenior understands the inherent demands and expectations that come with leading the Blues and is confident the work being done on and off the pitch at the club will bear fruit.
After being appointed Chelsea head coach in early January, Rosenior has already overseen 17 matches across four competitions.
We remain firmly in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League, have an FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale to come, and welcome Paris-Saint-Germain to Stamford Bridge tomorrow in the Champions League Round of 16 second leg.
There is a big job at hand for the Blues against the reigning European champions, as we have to overturn a three-goal deficit after a 5-2 first-leg defeat in Paris. Rosenior deployed a man-to-man pressing approach in the French capital last week, which was effective for much of the contest.
Whether our head coach opts to deploy a similar strategy will become clear tomorrow evening, but he highlighted that the goals conceded in the first leg were not down to our structure without the ball, which the Blues head coach says will only improve the longer he works with his squad.
‘If you look at the game against PSG, the goals had nothing to do with our press, especially the most important goal, which is the third goal,’ Rosenior explained at his pre-match press conference.
'The press we had against PSG and in other games has given us the platform in our performances. The longer you have to work on it, the better it’ll be.
'It’s been 17 games in ten weeks; it’s a lot of games to play without much training time. The lads have given it the best shot possible in terms of what I want to put into the team and if we continue in vein that I see, then we will improve and get better at it.'
Such has been our fixture schedule following Rosenior's appointment, that the majority of the work conducted on the training pitches at Cobham has been focused on pre-match preparation and post-game recovery.
Yet our head coach has seen firsthand the quality within our first-team squad and believes the Blues will be successful in the years ahead because of the foundation being laid.
'You want to be successful in the now; I want to be successful right now. Everybody does. At the same time, you have to plan for the future. There is an idea for this club to be successful for a long time – not just for one year – but to have consistent success.
'If you want to build something, you need to make sure the foundation is there – then the results follow. I know the plans. I’m excited by the plans. And I’m excited to be part of it.
'I’m excited by players like Joao [Pedro, who joined Rosenior for the pre-match press conference] joining the club at their age they’re at. I’m looking forward to a long period working with them and getting the success this club deserves.’
General admission tickets have sold out for our Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain, but you can still secure your place at Stamford Bridge with Club Chelsea. Seat-only tickets are available to purchase now, starting from £250 per person.
