Liam Delap may not have found the net at his former club Hull City, but with three assists the striker still played a pivotal role in our comfortable FA Cup success on Humberside. It was a display that earned praise from his head coach Liam Rosenior.

Delap spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Hull, when Rosenior was in charge of the Tigers. In Friday’s fourth round tie, Rosenior and Delap helped ensure the pair enjoyed a happy return to the MKM Stadium as Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners.

Delap had nearly opened the scoring before setting up the first of Pedro Neto’s three goals with half-time on the horizon. He then showed his selflessness by laying on an easy chance that Estevao Willian finished with aplomb, and later completed a treble of assists for Neto’s hat-trick goal.

Of those, his driving run, vision and unselfishness for the Brazilian’s strike best exemplified Delap’s capabilities.

‘That’s what Liam’s all about,’ said Rosenior.

‘Running in behind, using his speed, and then his awareness to pick out Este [for our third goal] was top. It was a great run.

‘To be a number nine, especially in a system that we play, it's not always about yourself,’ Rosenior added.

‘It's about bringing other people into play, it's about sometimes making sacrifice runs so other players get space and [against Hull], he started our press so well. It was a top, top display.’
