Liam Rosenior has confirmed Marc Cucurella will miss Friday’s FA Cup clash with Hull City, but hopes to have Reece James available.

The Blues head to Humberside looking to progress to the fifth round of the world’s oldest club cup competition with victory over the Tigers – a side Rosenior has previously played for and managed - having already seen off Championship opponents in this competition in the form of Charlton Athletic.

Our head coach spoke to the media ahead of Friday evening’s cup tie, confirming that Cucurella – who was forced off during our midweek draw with Leeds United – will miss this fixture, but skipper James could return to action having been sidelined with illness recently.

‘For Marc, it’s too early to know [the extent of the injury],’ Rosenior confirmed at his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

‘He’s definitely out for the game against Hull. We’re doing our scans and assessments on him and hopefully, it’s not too long [his absence].

‘Reece has done modified training; but he’s still under the weather. We’ll make a decision on Reece tomorrow, but it’s good news that he’s back on the training pitch.

‘In terms of his injury, he’s absolutely fine. He’s had a really bad bug but hopefully he’s recovered from that.’

Rosenior was speaking less than 24 hours after our frustrating draw with Leeds United at Stamford Bridge. And while not content with the final result, he believes there were several positives that can be taken into the games ahead.

That starts against Hull on Friday evening, with our head coach keen to progress in the competition we last won in 2018 under Antonio Conte.

Despite frustrations at not taking all three points against Daniel Farke’s side, Rosenior felt there were plenty of positives we can take from the game going forward.

‘My balanced view is that 99 per cent of the game [against Leeds] is what I want to see,’ Rosenior commented.

‘In terms of with the ball, without the ball, how we are defending set plays, in terms of our threat on set plays, in terms of our energy, our courage, our habits; it was very, very good.

‘It was just those little moments of switching off. Those are the bits where we have to improve, but saying that, there was a lot of good in what we did last night and there are ways we can focus on that and make sure it’s even better going forward.’
