Goals may be the currency that strikers live off, but Liam Rosenior says there is much more to their game that he analyses and expects.
Since taking charge of the Blues last month, Rosenior has seen Joao Pedro hit top form: the Brazilian has netted six goals in eight games.
Another forward, Liam Delap, has yet to etch his name on the scoresheet in that time. However, the trio of assists he registered in our FA Cup victory over Hull City showed what the 23-year-old is capable of.
Delap's graft for the greater good has not gone unnoticed by Rosenior, who explained that working hard is the priority for those who spearhead the Chelsea attack.
‘That’s the first thing I look for in my strikers,’ the head coach explained in his pre-match press conference ahead of Burnley's visit to Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
‘I look for people who contribute to the team winning games of football. Liam certainly did that against Hull and has done that in other games as well.
‘All strikers want to score goals, of course, that’s why they play the game and what they love to do. But there’s a lot more you need [to win games].
‘You need 11 attackers and 11 defenders at all times and Liam defends from the front amazingly well, so does Joao. They have contributed to what has been a good record for us recently, and it has to continue.’
Rosenior also recognises that periods of acclimatisation are to be expected for players signing for new clubs. He hopes to see Delap flourish further over time, but the efforts of the strikers at his disposal have pleased him so far.
‘If you look at most players’ careers, after they have joined a club, it’s the second season they really take off.
‘For Liam, he’s had some really, really good performances, but also his rhythm has been interrupted by injury. I’m really happy with Joao and really happy with Liam.
‘I think Marc Guiu, when we’ve called upon him, has been very good, and that needs to continue for us to be successful.’
