Liam Rosenior expects a ‘very difficult game’ for his Chelsea side against Napoli this evening and has highlighted the Champions League fixture’s importance to the Blues’ season.
It is in southern Italy that our league phase campaign draws to a close and a victory, coupled with results elsewhere, could prove enough for Rosenior’s side to secure a top-eight finish that would ensure direct progress to the Round of 16.
Napoli, meanwhile, enter the game 25th in the league phase standings. The Serie A side, managed by Antonio Conte, must claim victory if they are to keep their European campaign alive through the knockout phase play-offs.
With three points invaluable for either side, Rosenior is expecting an exciting yet challenging contest for his Blues.
‘This is a very, very strong team,’ he said at his pre-match press conference. ‘I think they have been unfortunate in the recent games that they played; the results haven't followed the performances that Antonio’s (Conte’s) team have produced.
‘We know it’s going to be a very, very difficult game in a very, very special atmosphere. It doesn't change my plans at all because I've been planning for a very difficult game.
‘In the Champions League, Serie A or the Premier League, you can’t expect anything. The competition is always so high. Napoli are a great team and they proved that with a fantastic title win last season.
‘They have outstanding individual players and a world-class coach. They are still in a position where they can get through and we’re aware of that.
‘I think it will make for an exciting game because Napoli have to win and for us to have a realistic chance of finishing in the top eight, we also have to win.’
Rosenior, who was appointed Chelsea head coach earlier this month, made a winning start in the Champions League as the Blues overcame Pafos at Stamford Bridge last time out.
His message to the Chelsea squad has not changed ahead of the clash in Naples: the focus is on what can be achieved now, not in the future.
‘We know how difficult this game is going to be, and we know how important it is to our season.
‘What I’ve said to my players since I stepped foot through the door is that we have to just focus on the next game – and we know the next game is going to be a very, very difficult one.’
