Liam Rosenior highlighted the qualities Andrey Santos and Alejandro Garnacho bring to the Chelsea side ahead of our Premier League trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, emphasising both will play important roles for the Blues in the weeks and months ahead.
Speaking to the media ahead of today’s Premier League away trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers, our head coach was asked for his assessment of the performances of two of his players in particular, both of whom he believes are being underestimated by those outside of the club.
The first of those is Santos, who Rosenior knows well after the Brazilian’s starring role for his Strasbourg side on loan last season, and the now Blues boss was unequivocal in his praise for the 21-year-old midfielder.
‘Andrey, for me, is a magnificent player,’ Liam explained. ‘He’s a young player who plays way beyond his years.
‘He is what I would call an “intangibles player”, where he does things in games that sometimes people don’t see. He will, for example, fill a position when the ball is nowhere near him, or he’ll make the right pass and two or three passes later we end up with a chance.
‘Andrey helps players around him become better players because he’s so selfless in the way he plays. He’s been top in the games that he’s played, and I’m really enjoying working with him again.’
The other player discussed was Garnacho, and while Rosenior conceded the Argentinian had a tough first half against West Ham United before our dramatic comeback, it was the same story for many of his Blues team-mates.
Our head coach also felt the Argentina international did well after coming off the bench at Arsenal in midweek and believes the only way is up for the 21-year-old as his debut campaign in west London progresses.
‘Ale would be the first to say maybe his performance wasn’t at his level in the West Ham game, but there were many collective things, and our performance in that first half wasn’t good enough.
‘That game’s gone, it’s finished. I know Garna is an outstanding player, that’s why he’s here. He has many more good times to come.
‘At Arsenal, when he came on, I saw Garna take the game forward. I saw him reach really good positions. He’s one-v-one against one of the best one-v-one defenders in world football – we were playing against a good team on Tuesday night.
‘He creates a threat in terms of his movement. He's got my full backing; I’ll always defend my players. He just needs to get some games and some rhythm, which is difficult at the moment because of the amount of changes we’re making. But I back him to have a really good second half of the season.’
