Liam Rosenior felt the attitude and energy shown by his Chelsea players, in addition to 'valuing the basics of football', were crucial in helping the Blues record a 2-0 victory over Brentford.

In what was Rosenior's first Premier League game in charge, we opened the scoring midway through the first half when Joao Pedro fired home from inside the box after excellently controlling a ricochet off Enzo Fernandez.

Brentford had chances to level; the Blues had opportunities to add to our lead.

Yet it wasn't until the 76th minute that the second goal arrived - and it went the way of Rosenior's side. Caoimhin Kelleher brought down Liam Delap in the Bees' penalty area and Cole Palmer stepped up to convert to seal a hard-fought win.

Rosenior accepted after the game that the Blues had not been at our fluid best in possession, but he praised the battling qualities displayed by his side to earn all three points.

'I felt [we showed] the attitude, the energy levels, the valuing of the basics of football,' said Rosenior. 'You need those when you play a good team, like Brentford, who can play in many different ways, who are very good on set-plays, long throws and are so organised.

'What pleased me the most, which was summed up into two goals, was the players' willingness to battle, to fight, to block shots, to make headers and tackles. That's the reason we got the clean sheet – and actually it was the attitude that got us the two goals and win us the game.'

He continued: 'It was going to be a real test for us and sometimes you have to win the game in different ways. So, for me, it's about winning, and I've said that since I've come in. We didn't play the free-flowing football that I want us to in the end, but we got the job done.'

Brentford had their chances in the game, one of which came at the start of the second half with the score at 1-0. Bees forward Kevin Schade was put through one-on-one with Robert Sanchez, who produced an excellent reaction stop to save.

It was a big moment in the game – one that enabled us to go on and secure all three points. And Rosenior praised the Chelsea goalkeeper following our victory.

'Rob was outstanding today,' the Blues head coach said. 'In terms of his distribution, there were a couple of fantastic long passes to our wide players, in terms of his command of the box, in terms of the saves that we needed him to make.

'It was a fantastic performance, but it doesn't surprise me as I've known Rob a long time.'
