Josh Acheampong is one of the players to have started both of Liam Rosenior’s games in charge so far, and the Chelsea Academy graduate has already left a major impression on our new head coach.

The 19-year-old lined up at right-back against Charlton and Arsenal, impressing with his defensive positioning, comfort in possession and willingness to get forward and make decoy runs.

Even in the short time he has worked with Acheampong, Rosenior has enjoyed what he has seen from him on the grass, while away from the pitch it is clear he has the right personality to succeed.

‘I've been so impressed with Josh so far in the last two games and in training,’ said Rosenior.

‘He's a very level-headed kid with a lot of humility, which is a great sign. The beautiful thing with Josh is that he can play five different positions. He can play on the left, he can play centre-back, he can play right centre-back, he can play midfield, he can play on the wing. That's a great thing to have for a player of his age and temperament.

‘And I'm going to keep pushing him and I'm going to keep demanding different things from him because he has a really, really bright future.’

Rosenior is also appreciative of the support network Acheampong has around him. The likes of Reece James – another Academy graduate who can play in similar positions to Acheampong – can pass on advice to the England Under-21 international. Forging such connections will only benefit the developing players in our squad according to Rosenior.

’When I was a player, the most important conversations I had were with senior players,’ said Rosenior. ‘I didn't listen as much to my coaches when I was a player as I hope my players do to me!

‘I want that interaction between the group. If it's Josh speaking to Reece James, that is an unbelievable conversation with the experiences Reece has had. I want to encourage that interaction between the group, but I also want the players to feel confident enough in their own game and abilities to do that.’

Acheampong’s natural talent and willingness to learn stands him in good stead to benefit from time spent on the pitch and talking to his team-mates.
