Liam Rosenior believes it’s important the Blues continue to learn from our recent setbacks and stated Chelsea's players have already proven we can be an elite team for a long time to come.
After suffering a narrow defeat to Arsenal at the weekend and dropping points to Leeds and Burnley in recent weeks, the Blues have endured a trickier spell of form as of late, however, head coach Rosenior is adamant this will only help to produce stronger characters over the long term.
With our squad continuing to grow together, Rosenior acknowledges experiences like these can play an important role in the team’s development, helping the group learn and improve collectively from setbacks.
‘The beautiful thing about having a young team is that sometimes you need to go through experiences to improve,’ Rosenior explained.
‘This is a massive learning experience for my group – and I do not want it to be an experience where we fail in what we want to achieve. But these setbacks we’re having, we have to learn from them because if we do, we have proven, even in my short time here, that we can be an elite team for a long time.’
Rosenior knows it’s about improving how we react to those setbacks, with all eyes on setting the record straight at Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
Our head coach believes maintaining composure in those difficult moments will be key if the Blues are to continue progressing. With mistakes part of the modern game, Rosenior agrees it’s not about eradicating them entirely, but about how his players respond in the moments that follow.
‘I think reacting to setbacks – and sometimes that is giving the ball away or the referee making a decision you disagree with – you have to react positively and think of the next thing,’ he continued.
‘That is what we have to go after in our discipline to improve. If you look at our stats when we have 11 men on the pitch, before and after my time here, our percentage chance of winning goes through the roof. That needs to be motivation in itself to make sure we stay disciplined in key moments.’
