It is often said that 'less is more', and when Liam Delap was questioned about what Liam Rosenior's had asked of his strikers following his appointment as head coach, the response was one simple word: score.

Delap's comment was followed by the cheeky grin which fans are becoming accustomed to seeing from the 22-year-old and you suspect there might well have been more instructions than that over the last couple of weeks, baring in mind the striker had earlier spoken of how Rosenior was 'very detailed' in his preparations.

But it was a comment which highlighted how Delap understand very clearly what is required of him to lead the line for Chelsea under Rosenior.

Like Andrey Santos, who played under Rosenior last season at Strasbourg, Delap is probably one of the best people in the Chelsea camp to speak about what is required from their new head coach, after spending the 2023/24 season playing for the Englishman during a season-long loan at Hull City in the Championship.

Despite being just 20 for most of the campaign and missing a third of the season through injury, Delap scored eight goals and assisted another two in 32 appearances for the Tigers, as Rosenior helped the youngster produce the best form of his career up until that point, earning a move to newly-promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town in the process.

Delap was asked what Chelsea fans can expect from a Rosenior team and also about any differences with former head coach Enzo Maresca during the pre-match press conference for tonight's game with Pafos.

'Each manager has their differences,' Delap replied. 'It's going to be a very exciting way of playing. We want to be very strong on the ball and dominate games of football.

'We're all looking forward to it and hopefully we can show the fans this is going to be an exciting way of playing and we're going to score a lot of goals.'

Chelsea have had a game every three-to-four days since Rosenior started his role on 8 January, meaning that full training sessions have been limited.

But Delap doesn't think it will be long before the team are able to play in the way Rosenior would like.

'Obviously, I spent a year at Hull with Liam and his patterns and how he wants to play, which is the same, so it is helpful because I already know how he wants to play,' Delap said.

'We've had so many games in a short period of time, so it's been difficult to get everything across like how he would want to, but we've had a lot of meetings and in training we're focussed and he's very detailed, so hopefully in the next few weeks we can take on board more of his ideas.'

After featuring in six of our seven Club World Cup games in the summer, a combination of injury, illness and suspension has limited Delap to eight starts and nine substitute appearances this season, with a bout of illness ruling the striker out of last week's League Cup semi-final with Arsenal.

Delap was one of several players struck down by the illness over the last week but he returned for the final quarter of an hour against Brentford on Saturday and it was his quick reactions that won the penalty, which was duly converted by Cole Palmer for 2-0.

'Yeah, I'm sweet now,' Delap said of the illness. 'It was bad. I'm not usually too bad with illness, but this one was really bad. And, yeah, a few of the boys have had it but hopefully we can get through this little period and we will be all right.'

Injury and illness might have meant Delap's first season at Chelsea might not have quite gone to plan so far but he has no doubts the goals will come as he gets back to playing regularly.

'Obviously I am still young and I want to keep improving,' he said. 'I think at the moment it's very difficult to get that rhythm of playing. It is so important to have that match fitness and feeling sharp. I'm here to win and score goals for Chelsea so that is the aim.'
