It’s almost as if Livia Peng doesn’t need to tell us that she’s had a good first season at Chelsea, because we can tell from the huge smile on her face when we sit down to chat with her in the Cobham sunshine.

When she arrived in London from Werder Bremen last summer, she explained that it had been her childhood dream to play for the Blues, and since then, she has made 11 first-team appearances between the posts.

Alongside Hannah Hampton and Becky Spencer, Peng has developed strong bonds within the goalkeepers' union, but that has not diluted her ambitions for what she'd like to achieve on a personal level with Chelsea.

‘I think it was a good first season for me, and I really enjoyed it,’ said the Switzerland international. ‘The team is amazing, and everyone has been supporting me. The welcome I had and the whole year was really cool.

‘I’ve developed as a goalkeeper while I’ve been here, with the opportunities I got and the games I could play. I’m training with such amazing players, which is really cool, and I think it helps me a lot.’

Peng deputised for a short spell when Hannah Hampton suffered an injury in early November. That might’ve otherwise been her only chance to play, but instead, head coach Sonia Bompastor rotated her into the side for the penultimate Women’s Super League match of the season, a 3-1 win away at Leicester City.

‘It was really good to play against Leicester,’ Peng continued. ‘I was happy about that. I think it was important for me as well, because it's not easy to just train. Every player wants to play games, so that was a little bit tough, to be honest. Hopefully next season, I get the chance even more… let's see.’

After starring in the Women’s European Championships on home soil as Switzerland’s first-choice goalkeeper last summer, Peng is looking forward to a break in the post-season period.

She explained how she will spend her precious time off, and how she has now returned to a childhood pastime she once shunned.

‘I can’t even remember the last time I had so many weeks off,’ she said. ‘I'm really excited for some days off and to go home as well to go on vacation. Also, to prepare for the new season, to get fit and ready to start again.

‘I'm going to Morocco and to Albania and Montenegro. And then I want to spend some days at home as well, because I'm not often at home. I really like to be at home in the mountains, the lakes. I love Switzerland. I swim, take an ice bath, I read – I love reading – and sometimes I go hiking when it’s not too hot.

‘I love being outdoors, but the funny part is I didn't like hiking for a long time because we did it so much when I was a kid. But now it's coming back, so I'm liking it more again.’

As we conclude the conversation, Peng contemplates what she would like to achieve next season as a collective. And when it comes to her own aims, it’s evident that she would like to build on the first team appearances she made during her first season in blue.

‘I hope we win titles next season, of course,’ she concludes. ‘I think that's the most important. And that we grow as a team and we are successful as a team.

‘Personally, I hope to get more minutes, to learn, to develop. I’ll be building towards the World Cup as well; being ready for that is really important.’
