With many leagues now a month into 2023/24 we summarise how those Chelsea players out on loan have been getting on so far…

In England

Starting in the Premier League, Andrey Santos made his Nottingham Forest debut in the Carabao Cup second round defeat to fellow Premier League side Burnley, playing 90 minutes as they lost late on.

Cesare Casadei has made a major impression at Leicester. On debut, the midfielder scored a dramatic injury-time winner for the Foxes in their 2-1 victory over Cardiff City, showing his predatory instincts to fire home following a goalmouth scramble.

He came off the bench in their next two leagues games, one won and one lost, and also played 90 minutes and recorded an assist in Leicester’s League Cup win at Tranmere.

Another youngster impressing in England’s second tier is Omari Hutchinson. He has been a used substitute in each of Ipswich’s league games so far, while starting both League Cup wins to date. On Saturday, the 19-year-old set up Ipswich’s late winner against Cardiff with some tricky wing play (below).

Exeter City are flying at the top of League One and Dion Rankine has played a big part in that. He has been a starter on the right flank in each of their six league games thus far, four of those won and another drawn. Rankine did, however, go off injured with a hamstring problem in their most recent game, away to Burton Albion.

Also in League One, Zak Sturge made his professional debut as a late sub in Peterborough’s 3-1 loss at Portsmouth on Saturday, while Harvey Vale has come off the bench for Bristol Rovers four times in the first month of the season, scoring in a 2-1 loss at home to Wycombe.

In non-league, young goalkeepers Teddy Sharman-Lowe and Teddy Curd have made an appearance each for Bromley and Hashtag United respectively. The latter completed a switch on deadline day.

In Europe

Charlie Webster had an eventful full debut for Heerenveen on Saturday. The midfielder scored his first senior goal after capitalising on a goalkeeper error, but was later dismissed for an overly forceful tackle as Heerenveen were beaten 3-2 at Go Ahead Eagles.

Gaga Slonina
has been an ever-present for Eupen in the Jupiler Pro League in Belgium, helping them record two victories from their first four fixtures and showing confidence playing out under pressure.

Across the border in France, Angelo Gabriel has featured three times as a sub for Strasbourg in Ligue 1.

David Datro Fofana has started each of Union Berlin’s four games in all competitions, deployed in different positions across their attack. In their first outing in the Champions League group stage, Union have been drawn with Real Madrid, Napoli, and Braga. They start with a mouthwatering trip to the Bernabeu.

Speaking of Real Madrid, Kepa has played their last two games, both narrow victories. Romelu Lukaku made his Roma debut in a 2-1 defeat to AC Milan on Friday night after joining Jose Mourinho’s side the previous day.
