Several Chelsea loan players have been in action over the last week, including Bashir Humphreys netting his first senior goal, Tino Anjorin making his first start for more than a year and Mason Burstow assisting in back-to-back wins...
On the scoresheet
Bashir Humphreys got off the mark for Swansea City by scoring a fine winner against Norwich City in the Championship, getting his first goal in senior football. With the scores locked at 1-1 and seven minutes remaining, Humphreys sealed a 2-1 victory in emphatic style. The Canaries failed to clear a corner, allowing the defender to control on his chest before lashing in a powerful volley.
He had earlier played the full 90 minutes as Swansea kept a clean sheet in a comfortable 3-0 win at Millwall. Having failed to win any of their first seven league games of the season, Swansea now have three victories in a row.
Also in the Championship, Mason Burstow played a key role as Sunderland recorded back-to-back victories, making it five wins from their last six games and moving up to fourth place in the table. He provided the assist for Jack Clarke to give them a 2-0 lead in a flying start against Sheffield Wednesday. Burstow was then pulled down in the box, resulting in Clarke netting from the penalty spot to make the final score 3-0.
Burstow was at it again as Sunderland defeated 10-man Watford on Wednesday evening, his cross leading to Abdoullah Ba scoring their second in a 2-0 win.
After making his third start of the season for Leicester City in their 3-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Liverpool, Cesare Casadei came off the bench in consecutive Championship wins to return to the top of the table, beating Preston North End 3-0 and Blackburn Rovers 4-1.
Omari Hutchinson played the full 90 minutes for the first time this season as he helped Ipswich Town secure a 1-1 draw at Huddersfield Town, briefly taking them top of the table, before coming on in a 3-0 win over Hull City, which saw them maintain pace with leaders Leicester.
Pair of full debuts
There was a full Portsmouth debut for Tino Anjorin in League One. Having made three substitute appearances, the attacking midfielder was included in the starting line-up as Pompey hosted Wycombe Wanderers, but they had to come from behind in the second half, securing a 2-1 victory thanks to a 98th-minute winner, staying top of the table. It was the 21-year-old's first professional start since September 2022, following injury.
Harvey Vale continued to feature at left-back for Bristol Rovers, helping them bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Peterborough United with a 3-0 thrashing of 10-man Port Vale. Zak Sturge came off the bench in that win for Peterborough United, as well as a 1-1 draw at Carlisle United, keeping them in the play-off places.
Lewis Hall was handed his full debut for Newcastle United. Having come off the bench to make his first appearance late on in their 8-0 league thrashing of Sheffield United, Eddie How named Hall in the starting line-up for a Carabao Cup tie at home against Manchester City. He played the first half of the match on the left wing, as the Magpies triumphed 1-0.
Keeping it clean
Kepa Arrizabalaga kept back-to-back clean sheets to help Real Madrid stay top of La Liga, beating Las Palmas 3-0 and Girona 2-0, before continuing their 100 per cent start to the Champions League group stage with a 3-2 victory at Napoli.
Romelu Lukaku and Roma lost 4-1 at Genoa in Serie A, but the Belgian striker got his third goal of the season to complete the scoring when they bounced straight back by beating Frosinone 2-0 on Sunday.
In France, Angelo Gabriel made his second start of the season as Strasbourg were beaten 1-0 at home by Lens. David Fofana was in the Union Berlin line-up as they were beaten 1-0 at Heidenheim in the Bundesliga. Gaga Slonina and Eupen suffered defeat to Anderlecht in Belgium. They pulled level after going behind in the first minute, but ultimately went down 3-1.
