During the traditional lap of appreciation at the end of the final home game, Terry was invited to take the microphone and address the crowd. Here's what he said.

'Firstly, just before I start, can I call someone up: Steve Holland. t's also Steve's last game today [at Stamford Bridge], and he's been different class, starting with the youth team, the youngsters, and into the first team. Last year he stepped up to the plate and pulled us through a difficult season.

'Today is without doubt one of the most difficult days of my life,' the skipper continued.

'I’ve been very fortunate to work with some unbelievable players and managers throughout my career, not only the ones that are here today. I’ve had some great occasions and won some great trophies, so thank you to every single one of you.

'We all have to thank this man as well, Mr Roman Abramovich. He is the best owner in world football, without a doubt. Yes, he’s put an awful lot of money into this football club but he cares. Right from the Under-8s, Under-9s and Under-10s this man cares and looks to improve year in and year out, to give us the best opportunity. Roman, on behalf of myself, the players and supporters, thank you very much.

'I’d like to thank my wife and our kids for supporting me on this amazing journey, thank you.

'Lastly you guys, the fans, the best supporters in the world without a shadow of a doubt. You’ve given me everything from the age of 17 when I first started out. You’ve picked me up when I was down and sung my name when I’ve had bad games and disappointed you as well.

'Thank you will never ever be enough, but I'll tell you what: I'll be back here one day. I'm going to be supporting the players and the club from the bottom of my heart. Thank you so much, I love you all.

'Lastly, I'd like to thank this man [then manager Antonio Conte].
