The defender spent a hugely successful spell with the French club and will return to familiar surroundings in the Women's Champions League as one of four Chelsea players with previous connections to Lyon.

Bronze was delighted to come through Sunday's hard-fought victory over Arsenal with three points, but her attention has already turned towards our next major test.

‘It was a well-earned three points,’ Bronze said. ‘The game kind of went Arsenal's way in the first half, then we stepped it up in the second, and they threw the kitchen sink at us in the end. It was an entertaining game for the fans. It was a really challenging game to play in, but ultimately I was so happy with the three points. It puts us in a great position near the top of the table.’

The full-back has made no secret of her love for playing in the biggest matches, and Lucy is enjoying the prospect of continuing to test herself against Europe's elite with another round of Champions League fixtures in her sights.

‘It's great. I love playing in the big games, the challenging games,’ she added. ‘That's what the best players in the world want to do. They want to play for the best teams, to be able to compete for trophies, to compete in the league.

‘That's exactly what we're doing this season. We're pushing ourselves in every single game to be able to compete and win every trophy we can.’

After securing a hard-fought 1-0 win in the opening match of our Champions League campaign, the Blues are preparing to capitalise on the three points already earned in the competition's league phase. The match will see Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor and her assistant, Camille Abily, return to face their former side, and Bronze is already up for the challenge.

‘It's so exciting,’ Bronze said. ‘My time at Lyon was amazing. All the girls, Ellie (Carpenter), Keish (Kadeisha Buchanan) and Melvine (Malard) had a great time at Lyon, and we all actually played there together as well.

‘We're excited to go there, to be focused on the Champions League, and we know what pedigree Lyon have in the Champions League. To go toe to toe with another team who's one of the best in the world and test ourselves and prove ourselves is going to be exciting.’

Bronze's focus is firmly on Wednesday's Champions League trip to Lyon, before Chelsea return to domestic action away at West Ham United at the weekend.

However, there will be little time to rest, with another challenge already on the horizon for Bronze as she prepares to represent England against Greece in a vital two-legged World Cup qualification play-off in October.

Bronze is a mainstay under Sarina Wiegman, and speaking before Potter was officially included in the England squad on Tuesday morning, she gave her full support for her Blues team-mate joining the senior ranks.

‘I'm not the manager and Sarina will make her choices, but Lexi has been absolutely fantastic,’ Bronze continued. ‘She was last year too. I remember my first season at Chelsea and seeing her train at the level she was.

‘Having a player like Keira to look up to, and base her style off and learn from, you can see in every game they are developing into the same player. If England have another Keira Walsh, it puts us in a very good position! Similar for Chelsea.’
