New Chelsea Women’s signing Catarina Macario has spoken of her delight at joining the Blues and her honour at being handed the number nine shirt for next season.

The Brazilian-born American international has agreed to join Chelsea from Lyon – where she lifted the Champions League previously – and will officially become a Blue from 1 July.

After finalising her deal, and taking in a tour of London, the striker caught up with us to chat about the move to Chelsea.

‘I’m very excited to be here,’ the American forward said of her move to the Blues.

‘Obviously Chelsea is a very big club and I can’t wait to join and get started. Being given the number nine shirt is a huge honour and I hope I can represent the jersey well during my time here!’

Despite being handed the number nine shirt, Macario believes she can add different options in the forward lines for Emma Hayes and hopes her experiences of winning silverware in Europe with Lyon can continue at Kingsmeadow.

‘I can play either as a No.10 or a more traditional number nine and I think I can offer plenty to the team, which is already full of top players,’ added the striker.

‘I’m looking forward to linking up with so many good forward players such as Sam [Kerr], Lauren James and Guro [Reiten]. It will be good to play with Kadeisha [Buchanan] again also.

‘I’ve been fortunate to have some great experiences in Europe already with Lyon, winning the Champions League, and I hope to carry on those experiences here and bring home the trophy for Chelsea as well.’
