Catarina Macario says the Blues were able to 'exercise our power' against St. Polten, but only by staying patient during the first half of our 6-0 Champions League victory.
The American international found the net twice in Austria as we made it back-to-back wins in Europe and moved up to second place in the league phase.
Macario was named Player of the Match by UEFA for her part in the emphatic win, but it was the team performance and the three points that mattered most to her.
‘Obviously, I’m very happy,’ said Macario. ‘It’s a great honour to receive Player of the Match, but I’m just happy to have been able to help the team by scoring goals or just doing my best to create some options.
‘To be honest, I’m just trying to take it one day at a time, whether that be in training or the next match. Obviously, I want to perform to the best of my ability to help the team win and move forward in every competition.'
Macario struck at key moments for the Blues, as our stubborn opponents had made it difficult to build on our early opening goal.
That was until the Chelsea No.9 swept in our second right on the brink of half-time to give us breathing room at the break. She then made it 3-0 from the penalty spot not long after the restart, effectively securing all three points, before we extended our advantage with a flurry of late goals.
‘We had to be very patient to break down their block,’ Catarina explained. ‘We were very patient in the first half, waiting for the goals to come, and eventually we were able to get our second goal.
‘We came out in the second half and were just able to really exercise our power. We had to be even more patient on the ball, move it even more quickly and then, eventually, we were able to break them down and the goals started flowing.’
That emphatic scoreline in Austria made it two wins in a row in Europe. The Blues will be hoping to continue that form when we next return to Champions League action for a massive game next Thursday.
We host Barcelona, the side that have knocked us out in the semis two years running, and have reached the last five finals, winning three of them.
