Noni Madueke and Levi Colwill are into the final four of the Under-21 European Championships after a 1-0 win over Portugal.

The young Chelsea duo were both selected in Lee Carsley’s starting XI as they claimed a huge victory in Kutaisi, Georgia. It means the Young Lions are yet to concede a goal at the Championships, with Colwill starting three of those clashes.

England won all three of their group stage games 2-0, recording maximum points and eliminating holders Germany in the process. Portugal, on the other hand, won just one of their three group games, but qualified second behind hosts Georgia.

The decisive moment came in the opening half as the Young Lions took the lead after more great work from Premier League duo Morgan Gibbs-White and Anthony Gordon. The latter of which finished coolly following a cut-back from the Nottingham Forest man.

Both the Chelsea representatives started in their usual positions: Madueke out wide right, Colwill on the left of a centre-back partnership.

Madueke was withdrawn after 74 minutes as Portugal began to gather momentum and knock on the door. New signing Diego Moreira, who the Blues announced as a Chelsea player on Saturday, started on the bench for Portugal.

He came on with just minutes remaining on the clock as Portugal piled the pressure on, his brightest moment an audacious piece of skill out on the right-wing as he took the ball past Ben Johnson.

They finished with 16 shots on the board compared to England’s six, and are unfortunate to be heading home.

England will play Israel at 5pm on Wednesday, who they beat in Group C 2-0.
