Noni Madueke was full of praise for team-mate Cole Palmer, following his starring role in our second-half comeback to beat Real Betis in the UEFA Conference League final.
As has so often been the case during his first two seasons in west London, it was Palmer who provided the creative spark which inspired Chelsea to victory in Wroclaw.
He supplied the assists for Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson to turn the game around in the second half and set us on our way to victory – and silverware – being named Man of the Match by UEFA for his brilliant contribution as well.
‘He's the one, he’s the truth,’ responded Madueke when asked about Palmer’s performance in Poland as the trophy celebrations got into full swing.
‘When we need him to be there, he’s there. Like a lot of us he had a quiet first half, but then the way he springs into life… I’m super happy for him, super proud for him as well.’
It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Blues against Betis, though. An early goal for the Spaniards meant we trailed 1-0 at the break, before that decisive intervention by Palmer launched us into the lead.
Later strikes from Jadon Sancho and Moises Caicedo made victory certain, as Betis could find no answer to the second-half reaction from Chelsea, with Madueke clear what he felt was different after the break.
‘Intensity, that’s the word I think,’ continued Noni. ‘We started off a little slow which has kind of been the story of a few of our first halves this season, especially in the Premier League.
‘But I think the way we came out, there was only going to be one winner, in my eyes. We turned it up.
‘I’m super proud of the boys and what we’ve achieved this season in general and in this competition.’
The current crop of Blues have now entered the Chelsea history books by continuing our proud history in Europe and once again demonstrating our resolve on the big stage, with the 2008 Champions League remaining the only one of our eight appearances in a European final which hasn’t ended with us lifting a trophy.
Last night’s victory made us the only club to have won all four current UEFA trophies – Conference League, Europa League, Champions League and Super Cup – in addition to the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup.
‘It’s a European final and everyone knows Chelsea’s resumé in European finals, so we weren’t going to be the ones to show up and not do our job.
‘We've got Champions League qualification. We’ve won a trophy. You can only win what’s in front of you so I feel like it’s been a great season.’
