For Malo Gusto, stepping out in Chelsea blue in the capital of his home nation will be a proud moment. But make no mistake, the French international wants only one thing – a first-leg victory to take back to London.
The Blues face Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night in a mouthwatering Champions League Round of 16 tie, with the two sides meeting again since our Club World Cup final victory in July.
Chelsea were the victors that day in New Jersey and, ahead of the meeting in Paris, Gusto is hoping for a repeat performance but feels the two games cannot be compared and insists the players will be well prepared for the test ahead under Liam Rosenior.
‘I think tomorrow will be completely different [to the Club World Cup final] as a contest,’ our versatile right-back explained at his pre-match press conference.
‘This is the Champions League, so it’s very different [type of game] and it’s a completely different competition.
As a player, we all remember that we beat them at the Club World Cup. It was a special time but it wasn’t something that was easy.
‘Of course, we have to take this as an advantage into tomorrow’s game and show our best qualities.’
The right-back, who can also operate on the left side of defence or in midfield, will hope to feature against PSG in his homeland and a huge smile crept across Malo’s face when he was asked about the prospect of playing in France tomorrow night.
The defender also hopes to maintain his fitness and form to be part of the French squad at the upcoming summer World Cup, in what could be a special for months for him.
‘It’s a great feeling [to be playing back in France],’ said Gusto.
‘I think it’s a good period for me and the club, as well as the national team at the moment, because we have some great competitions coming up – including a big game tomorrow night.
‘I’m trying to enjoy the moment, be the best version of myself on the pitch and help my team-mates as much as possible. I can’t wait for the future.’
