After Alejandro Garnacho created Malo Gusto’s first goal in a Chelsea shirt, our French full-back was quick to praise the contribution of his Blues team-mate.

It was an emotional moment at Stamford Bridge when Gusto broke his duck by netting his much-anticipated first Chelsea goal. It was as vital as it was deserved, though.

Gusto's close-range header broke Wolverhampton Wanderers’ stubborn resistance and opened the floodgates in the second half. Having looked like a potentially frustrating evening at half-time, we were set on our way to an eventual 3-0 victory and three more important Premier League points.

Gusto was in no doubt who he had to thank for fashioning that breakthrough, after Garnacho’s cross allowed the France international to find the net for the first time in his senior career.

‘He has a lot of quality as a winger,’ Malo replied when asked about the Argentinian’s contribution after the game.

‘He’s able to bring all our team into their box, which is part of the plan for us, asking the wingers to do these kinds of things, dribble of course, and create chances.

‘That’s what he did; he helped us a lot with his crosses. So I’m very happy to be playing with him.’

The display was arguably Garnacho’s best in a Chelsea shirt so far, with the Argentine lively throughout as he threatened the Wolves' defence. He also set up Pedro Neto to score against his former club for our third goal of the evening.

‘He’s a top guy, like every player here,' explained Gusto. 'He works a lot as well. So he’s a great guy, very competitive, and he helps us a lot, so I’m very happy to play with this type of player.

‘Of course, when you have qualities and people are waiting for you to prove it, you have to do it. If you want to show your best, you have to show it on the pitch. That’s what everyone tries to do at Chelsea. To play for Chelsea there are a lot of things you have to show on the pitch and off the pitch.

‘But it’s great to have him on the team, to have him keep improving to help us achieve our objectives at the end of the season, because there’s still a long way to go, so we have to keep trying.’

Turning to his own game, Gusto explained why he thinks gaining experience of several different positions at youth level, before finding his way to right-back at Lyon, has made him a better player.

That versatility has been evident with the Blues, as the French international has occasionally been used as a winger or a midfielder by Enzo Maresca, in addition to alternating between a traditional full-back overlapping down the flank or coming inside to bolster numbers in the centre of the pitch in possession.

‘I played everywhere when I was young,’ explained the 22-year-old. ‘I think that helped me a lot to understand every position, to understand the game better. I think I have this as a quality, so I try to do my best every time I play.

‘I try to give my best everywhere, it can be on the right side at right-back, a winger or as a midfielder as well. I think when you are good players you have to understand everything, it doesn’t matter the position where you play.’
