The saying ‘like London buses’ really does apply to Malo Gusto. After waiting 98 games for a first goal in Chelsea blue, he netted his second for the club just five matches later.
In Gusto's defence, goalscoring isn’t what the defender is primarily on the pitch to do. More often than not, you’d see him keeping the goals out of our net along with Robert Sanchez and co.
But this season, the French international has been providing a spark in offensive areas as well and, as you’ll have noticed, has been cropping up in several positions in addition to his customary right-back role.
With his eye-catching hair and the No.27 on his back, Gusto has been seen taking up areas in midfield, wide areas and even the number ten slot when joining in our attacks.
It’s led to him netting twice this season already – goals in the home wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton – and it’s led to many pundits believing that the former Lyon man is in the best form of his career.
So, ahead of our meeting with Bournemouth, our final game of the year, that question was put to the man himself. His answer was as modest and humble as ever.
‘Best form of my life? No, I think I’m on my way and progressing step by step,’ the right-back explained ahead of our clash with the Cherries.
‘I am not someone who puts pressure on myself. I just try to help the team as much as possible and I want to progress in any position where I can play, to help the team.
‘It’s great that I scored my first goals [for Chelsea], but it is not enough for me. I want to do a lot more.
‘Personally, I always try to give my best on the pitch, whether that is as a right-back, a midfielder or as a winger. I always just want to do my best and help the team as much as possible.'
The Blues will be looking to respond with three points in our final game of 2025, especially after dropping points against Newcastle and Aston Villa in our last two fixtures.
The visit of the Cherries gives us the perfect opportunity to return to winning ways, against a side we only faced a few weeks ago in the reverse fixture.
That ended in a goalless draw and Gusto is hoping that we can go one better when we meet again tonight.
‘It happens sometimes [that you play the same opponent in quick succession] and it will be another tough game,’ added Malo.
‘We want to win the game, so we have to stay focused and prepare for Bournemouth in the right way.
‘We have many things to improve, because we have lost points in the last few games. We are still competing, still trying to win and looking to get the three points in every game. We want to compete for more.’
