Malo Gusto praised the Blues’ togetherness following our important 2-0 win over west London rivals Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with the full-back believing our unity will be crucial heading into the rest of the campaign.
The Blues struck either side of half-time thanks to goals from Joao Pedro and Enzo Fernandez to secure three vital points, extending our unbeaten run and strong form in the Premier League. Our French full-back was particularly impressed with how we faced the challenge and the competitive nature of the west London derby head-on.
‘It was a derby – that’s what the game was about,’ the defender explained. ‘Every team wanted to win, so it’s normal to have a lot of duels. We were good with this, and that’s why we won today so we’re very happy.’
Reflecting on the rhythm of the season in its early stages, especially after an elongated campaign following our Club World Cup success, Gusto admitted it is always a test to maintain our high energy levels, but emphasised the squad’s focus.
He continued: ‘It’s always hard to keep the flow after a long season, but we are prepared for that. We have tried to do our best, and we are ready. It’s not an excuse for us. We just keep fighting. We are trying to rest a little bit more, but against Fulham we won because we were prepared.’
According to the 22-year-old, that preparation has been matched by our unwavering togetherness. That sense of unity in the camp is stronger than ever. Malo said: ‘We are a team now. Last season, we won two titles, and now people respect us, which is good. We just have to stay on this path, keep building and keep fighting.’
He feels a particular strength of the Blues this season is our new additions, and among those new arrivals, Joao Pedro has quickly made his mark, impressing both in training and on the pitch, opening the scoring against the Whites on Saturday.
Gusto was quick to highlight the Brazilian’s influence, adding: ‘Definitely, we feel better with our new arrivals.
‘Joao Pedro has been really good, he’s a top player. Everyone knows he has helped us a lot. We are very happy to have these types of players.
‘When he went to Brighton, I knew he would be a top player in the future. He’s young and he has the talent. He helped us against Fulham so it’s great for us and the club.
'We have a top group this season, so it’s up to us to do our best and try to win.’
