Malo Gusto is one of several Chelsea players who has sampled Champions League football for the first time this season. Ahead of our crucial eighth game in the league phase, against Napoli, we caught up with the Frenchman to get his thoughts on playing in Europe’s most prestigious competition and what he expects from tonight’s fixture.
Gusto featured in the Europa League for Lyon earlier in his career, and then last season was an important member of the Chelsea side that triumphed in the Conference League.
A few days after our victory in Wroclaw, Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League. We subsequently beat the French side in the Club World Cup showpiece, when Gusto was integral, so the right-back has certainly accrued his fair share of game time in European competitions and against some of the best teams in the world.
However, our game against Bayern Munich on matchday one back in September was Gusto’s first taste of the Champions League. He has loved it so far.
‘It’s been a great experience,’ Malo tells us.
‘Since I was young, I have always wanted to play in this competition. I’m very proud, and even prouder to play in it for Chelsea. So yeah, it’s a great feeling.
‘I have learned there is more intensity in the Champions League. The quality is different as well. We know how tough it is play in this type of competition.
‘Compared to the Conference League, there are more periods when we are under more sustained pressure because of the intensity of the games and quality of the teams.
‘It’s a level up from the Conference League and that’s where we want to be playing. If you are Chelsea, you are supposed to play these types of games the whole time.’
That is certainly what awaits us tonight. The Blues travel to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona knowing a victory will give us an excellent chance of securing a top-eight berth in the league phase of the competition.
It will not be easy going against Antonio Conte’s team, but the fact Napoli themselves probably have to win to guarantee their place in the top 24 could open the game up. It is set to be a compelling contest, with Gusto identifying one area he thinks will be pivotal.
‘There is a lot of tactical stuff we have to be spot on for, but I think it will be more about fighting and battling, because we know how tough it is to play away at this stadium,’ said the 22-year-old.
‘We have played in some great atmospheres in the Champions League which add to the intensity of the game. It will be the same against Napoli. It will be a tough game and we can’t wait to play it.'
Gusto added: ‘We know Italian teams are very tactical and physical. It is always hard to break their blocks. I think Napoli will be quite similar but they have to play to win the game, so we know what we are going to face.’
