Champions League. Under the lights. Beating Barcelona at the Bridge. Things don't get much better than that and it's why Marc Cucurella was proud to play a crucial role in our victory.
This fixture, with all its history, had all the makings of a Champions League classic, and it certainly delivered. Cucurella, who had been working tirelessly throughout the first half, found his reward as his cross was diverted goalbound by Jules Kounde to break the deadlock.
After the interval, the full-back watched Estevao Willian double our advantage with an outrageous solo run and finish with virtually every Chelsea player running to the Shed End to celebrate with the 18-year-old in a display of the team’s spirit and togetherness. And, that was before Liam Delap wrapped up the points and evening with his first Champions League goal, tapping home Enzo Fernandez's squared pass.
The former Barcelona man, who was awarded UEFA’s Player of the Match award for his night's work, was pleased not just with the victory but with our control of the game, as we rose to fifth in the league phase standings.
‘I’m very happy with our performance – I think the team responded really well and we deserved this win,’ Cucurella opened, speaking after the contest.
‘I feel very proud. It’s never easy in football, you always have ups and downs, but the most important thing is to stay consistent. I think you always want to improve and work hard, and after these moments, everything makes sense. You sacrifice a lot of things when you are young, and you need to be more mature. After these kinds of nights and these performances, everything makes sense.
‘We played with a lot of personality, and we controlled the game really well. It’s a very important three points.'
Cucurella’s job was always going to be difficult when facing a side like Barcelona that is full to the brim with talented individuals, but the full-back was able to quell any danger from the likes of Lamine Yamal.
‘I think this is part of football,’ Marc continued. ‘In another time we face each other, it might be different, but today we played really well.
‘I tried not to give anyone too much space, it's not all about me. My teammates helped me a lot – Moises [Caicedo] and Trevoh [Chalobah]. We’re really happy, and we put a lot of effort into the game.’
The 27-year-old also praised the impact of Estevao on the match as the winger sprinkled his magic on proceedings, with the defender backing the talented youngster to continue his impressive work with the support of his team-mates.
Marc said: ‘Hopefully, he can continue in this way. He’s a special talent. He scored finally with his right because in training he always tries with his right, and it’s nice to see him score in these big moments. He’s a special player, and now we need to help him to make sure he continues in this way.’
With another huge game to come this weekend against Arsenal, as the top two in the Premier League go head-to-head, Marc knows that momentum will be crucial in marginal moments, with last night’s victory over the Spanish champions only providing us with more confidence heading into Sunday.
‘We always respond really well in these kinds of games,’ he explained.
‘I think we have deserved these moments. We need to keep working hard, we want to keep improving, show our level, and hopefully we can continue in this way because the team were really good.’
