As Estevao Willian continues to acclimatise to English football, he will only benefit from fresh experiences, good and bad, according to Blues head coach Enzo Maresca.
The 18-year-old endured one of his tougher nights since signing for Chelsea in the opening 45 minutes of our 3-1 defeat to Leeds United on Wednesday evening.
After that game, Maresca described Estevao - who was withdrawn at the half-time break - as having received a ‘welcome to the Premier League’ and a ‘welcome to Leeds’. Yet while the evening did not go the Brazilian’s way, Maresca believes it will serve him in good stead nonetheless.
‘My comment is because he is 18, he is from Brazil, and he probably didn’t know [what to expect from] where we were going to play,’ noted the head coach when asked about Estevao at his press conference today.
‘The English players know Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, these stadiums that are a bit different compared to the rest in terms of the environment. So this is something that will be a process for him to be better and better.
‘It’s why I’ve said many times that with him, it’s too easy to put him on the pitch and let him play, play, play. In some moments, we have to manage him a little bit.’
Another South American attacker new to Chelsea is Facundo Buonanotte, who has not had any game time in the Premier League since the 2-2 draw at Brentford in September.
He has not been in the matchday squad for recent league fixtures, either, but Maresca explained it is nothing out of the ordinary.
‘Faco is working well. He played some games at the beginning for different reasons; Cole [Palmer] was injured and Liam [Delap] was injured, so we had more space for him. At this moment, we have a lot of players back.
‘Against Leeds, Wes (Fofana) wasn’t in the squad, Ty (George) wasn’t in the squad, Faco wasn’t in the squad. The reason why is that we have many players in his position who are back.’
