Enzo Maresca has expanded on the setback Dario Essugo suffered on Monday.

The midfielder had been back in training ahead of the Arsenal game as he continued his recovery from the surgery he underwent on a thigh injury suffered in September.

However, in his media conference ahead of our trip to Leeds, Maresca confirmed Essugo was ‘out’ once again and needed ‘to slow down a little’.

Our head coach has since expanded on the situation, confirming the Portuguese will not be able to take Moises Caicedo’s place on the pitch while he is serving his suspension.

‘I don’t think it’s a serious setback,’ said Maresca.

‘We need to check him because it just happened yesterday [Monday], unfortunately. For sure he’s not available for the next three [Premier League] games.’

Caicedo was performing to an exceptionally high level this season so there is no question his absence will be keenly felt against Leeds, Bournemouth and Everton.

Maresca is obviously very disappointed to be without the midfielder for three games, but if there is one silver lining it is that Caicedo can spend some time away from the pitch recuperating. The Ecuadorian has featured in 50 of Maresca’s 51 league games in charge to date despite often managing a knock.

‘This break will give him a little bit more rest because he is playing every game, also with the international team. That is the positive part.

‘Next Tuesday he will be available to play Atalanta, so one game in one week, but it’s a chance for him to recover energy and to recover from his knee problem.’
