Enzo Maresca continues to take our UEFA Conference League campaign one game at a time, despite today providing the chance to take one step closer to the final and a historic achievement no other club has ever managed in European competition.

Our head coach and his squad arrived in Sweden on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the first leg of our semi-final against Djurgarden tonight, with a place in the final up for grabs over this game and next week’s second match at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking in Stockholm ahead of tomorrow's game, Maresca explained why the opportunity to become the first club ever to win every current major European trophy – following previous victories in the Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Super Cup – makes this competition especially important for him and the Blues.

‘It’s a nice moment,’ said Enzo. ‘It’s also a nice game, a semi-final and we can reach the final. Since we started we have said we go step by step and now the next step is the final.

‘It’s a moment to win the game. It’s a moment to reach the final. It’s also a chance for us because it’s the only trophy this club needs to complete all the European competitions. That’s also a message that I’m trying to share with the players from the start. Tomorrow is the first game, hopefully we can get a good result and finish the second part in London.

‘I’m not sure if I would say it would be disappointing not to win the trophy, but now we are in the semi-final the next target is the final and then if we are able to reach the final we are able to go for the title.

‘For me it is a huge title because we can give this club the opportunity to be the only club in the world to win all the European competitions. It’s a responsibility for me, it’s a responsibility for the players, all of us together.’

However, Maresca won’t be underestimating the task ahead of us to reach the final, going into our tie against Djurgarden, and feels any players who weren’t already aware of that fact will have learned a valuable lesson from our defeat in the second leg against Legia Warsaw in the previous round, even if our win in the first game still ensured we triumphed 4-2 on aggregate.

‘Don’t take anything for granted!’ he emphasised. ‘When you win the first game 3-0, the second game you try to manage it a little bit and probably that was a mistake. Since we started we try to be very professional in every game, but for sure that was not our best game.

‘But probably the reason why was when you win 3-0 away, it can happen in the next one. Also because in three days we played Fulham away, so we were also trying to manage a little bit the players after the first result.

‘But it’s good that happened because now hopefully it’s not going to happen again.’
