Moises Caicedo was named the Chelsea Player and Players’ Player of the Season on Sunday, and head coach Enzo Maresca has explained just what the Ecuadorian brings to our midfield.
Caicedo has been outstanding for the Blues this term, and both his team-mates and the Chelsea supporters recognised his contributions by choosing him as the best of the bunch for 2024/25.
Maresca, who handed over his Player of the Season prize, added his name to the long list of people praising Caicedo by detailing his various attributes.
‘Moi is doing well since day one,’ said the head coach at his pre-Djurgarden press conference.
‘He is working very hard and very well. He is humble and the good thing about Moi is the way he behaves is a good example for all his team-mates and young players, even though he is still very young.
‘I see Moi as a six in the way he is playing since we started,’ added Maresca, focusing on his role in the side.
‘In the last games, he played some matches as a full-back off the ball, and then on the ball he is a six, a holding midfielder.’
Enzo Fernandez has been Caicedo’s most regular partner in the middle of the park this season, with Romeo Lavia also fulfilling that duty when he has been available for selection.
There is no question Maresca has midfield riches at his disposal. Getting the best out of them is part of his job as head coach, and Maresca provided some insight into his thinking and his demands of those players.
‘With Enzo [Fernandez], we are trying with him since day one to get more goals and assists,’ underlined Maresca.
‘In terms of numbers, he’s improved a lot, but I think he can do better. The way we play, he is a player that can score 10 to 15 goals a season.
'When we have the ball, Enzo is always playing in the same position. Off the ball when Romeo is not fit, he is defending a little bit more. I immediately saw Enzo can be a dangerous player arriving in the box, scoring goals, getting assists, and between goals and assists he has good numbers this season.
‘With Romeo, he is a six like Moi. We have said many times, with all the players fit, Romeo, Reece [James], Wes [Fofana], [Nicolas] Jackson, the team is a better team. Unfortunately, some have been injured for a long time, but hopefully we can keep them fit until the end of the season.'
‘When Romeo has been fit, Enzo has played most of the games,’ continued Maresca, when asked if the return of Lavia could impact Fernandez's game time longer term.
‘If Romeo is fit, it doesn’t mean there is no room for Enzo. With Romeo and Moi, we can support Enzo more defensively because we don’t need him defending too much. When Romeo was injured, Enzo dropped and tried to help Moi more. With all the players fit, the team is better.’
