Today’s visit from Barcelona holds extra resonance for Blues duo Marc Cucurella and Marc Guiu.
The pair were born and bred in Barcelona and came through La Masia, the club’s fabled Academy. Both took different paths to Stamford Bridge – Guiu directly in the summer of 2024 – and now both are preparing to face their former club in the Champions League.
Ahead of the game, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca has been discussing the Catalan duo’s roles in this Chelsea squad, starting with Cucurella. Now a Spain starter, the left-back has gone from strength to strength during his time at Stamford Bridge.
‘He has been phenomenal,’ said Maresca. Since I came to the club, his level has been high, not only his defending but also as part of our play with the ball.
‘Cucu always gives us an advantage, and we are delighted with him.’
Guiu, meanwhile, was due to further his development on loan at Sunderland this season, but having returned to Chelsea in the final days of the summer transfer window, the striker is making an impact. His fine assist for Enzo Fernandez at Burnley is a case in point.
Maresca recognised how unusual Guiu’s start to the season was, before explaining what his job is now.
'He's progressing very well. He was lucky enough to play almost the entire Conference League, scoring six or seven goals. Then, unfortunately, he suffered an injury, which can happen.
‘This season was a bit strange for him because he went on loan and returned a few weeks later. So at first it was a little difficult for him, but now he is working well.
‘We are very happy with him and all he has to do, because of age and for different reasons, is work, work and learn and try to be prepared when he has the opportunity.’
