Enzo Maresca is hoping a strong backing from Chelsea supporters at the MetLife Stadium can inspire the Blues to glory in the FIFA Club World Cup final.
Between a mixture of local fans from around the USA and those making the trip across the Atlantic hoping to see the Blues make history, it should be a good showing from the Chelsea supporters in New Jersey.
After six matches at this summer’s revamped and expanded tournament, only one remains. Paris Saint-Germain are the last obstacle standing between us and becoming the first team to lift the new Club World Cup trophy.
Before we take to the pitch in New Jersey for the final later today, our head coach had a simple message for the supporters, having built up a strong bond between the team and the fans over the course of a long but successful campaign across several competitions.
‘The message is that we need their support,’ responded Maresca, when asked what he would like to say to the Chelsea supporters ahead of the Club World Cup final.
‘The team deserves all the trust from the supporters, because during this season we finished in the top four in the Premier League, won the Conference League and have played in the Club World Cup all the way to the final. It’s been a great season.’
However, for Maresca, it is not the trophy already won or another hopefully to come which ranks as the achievement he is most proud of during his first year as Chelsea head coach.
Instead, he points to the growing sense of optimism and confidence around the club, along with the silencing of some of the noise from outside, as the most significant factors from a long but fruitful campaign.
‘For me, the biggest achievement of this season is that exactly one year ago nobody was talking about Chelsea and our football,’ added the Italian. ‘They were talking about a big squad and other things.
‘Now nobody is talking about those things. Now when people are talking about Chelsea it is about the way we win games, and personally that is the biggest achievement of the season.’
Hopefully by Monday morning, it will be the way Chelsea won the Club World Cup final that is the main talking point on people’s lips.
