Going into what Enzo Maresca expects to be a difficult challenge away at Servette, our head coach revealed he has held one-on-one talks with Nicolas Jackson and Mykhailo Mudryk to help them fit into his style.
Speaking ahead of tonight's UEFA Conference League qualifying round against Servette, Maresca discussed his conversations with two members of his squad in particular.
The first was striker Jackson, who has put in some impressive performances in recent weeks, including a brilliant assist for Cole Palmer's strike in our 6-2 Premier League win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.
Despite the strong competition for places in attacking positions for Chelsea, our head coach insists he has not had to reassure the Senegalese international, instead using his one-on-one time to highlight the good work the player has been doing.
'I had a meeting with Nicolas on Tuesday but just about the amount of good things he is doing with us on the pitch, because the focus now is just there,' explained Maresca.
'He’s our No9, our striker in this moment, and we are very happy with him. The reason I sat with him on Tuesday was I wanted to show him the amount of good things he is doing for us since we started.
'We are very happy with Nicolas and at the moment that is all we can say.'
Enzo also revealed that he has been speaking frequently with Mudryk since arriving as our head coach this summer, but has not felt the need to do so again this week after the winger was replaced by new signing Pedro Neto at half-time during that victory over Wolves.
'I have spoken with Misha since we started less than two months ago already five or six times. I didn’t speak to Misha after Wolves, I think Misha is very intelligent and he can understand the reason why we changed.
'It was just to try to change something, but nothing more than that. I was a player for 20 years and, when the manager changes you, most of the time you know very well why. As I said, Misha is intelligent and I think he can understand.'
Maresca then switched his attention from his own squad to our next opponents Servette. Despite the 2-0 lead we carry from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, the Italian is well aware of the challenges his side will face in Geneva this evening, a view which was only reinforced by last week's encounter with the Swiss side.
'They didn’t surprise me because I expected Servette in that way. I watched different games, they won the Swiss Cup last year, they are a good team with good players. They lost this year some games, for example against Basel, which was not the right outcome.
'But they did not surprise me because they are a very good team with very good players, they are quite clear in what they want to do. That is the reason why I expect a very tough game, because we are here in their stadium with their fans. So we need to be ready because these types of games are ones where I am a bit worried.
'You can see the style they want to play; the way they defend, the way they attack. You can see that they try to do this kind of long ball to the two guys up front. They are very tall and they win the duels most of the time, and from there it’s about the second ball. Off the ball they are very aggressive, especially in midfield, but these are the reasons why Servette do everything clear.'
