As he reflected on Chelsea’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Wolves in the Carabao Cup, Enzo Maresca acknowledged the significant discrepancy in his team’s performance over the course of the 90 minutes.
We had established a three-goal lead by half-time at Molineux courtesy of some scintillating football against a side rooted to the foot of the Premier League table.
However, the momentum shifted significantly after the interval, with Wolves clawing the scoreline back to 3-2 and then 4-3 following Jamie Gittens’ stunning first Chelsea goal.
In the final few minutes we were hanging on as the hosts sought an unlikely equaliser. It left Maresca with mixed emotions afterwards.
‘I am very happy with the first half, and very upset with the second half,’ Maresca said.
‘In the first half, we were very good. It’s always complicated to go away and score three goals. We were playing nice football, creating chances. We didn’t concede anything. The game was completely under control at 3-0.
'Second half we were not doing the right things. The first goal we conceded opened the game and gave them a boost and the energy to come back into the game. We panicked a little bit. We could have avoided all three of the goals we conceded.
‘But it’s part of the journey of this team, this squad, to gain experience to get better and better.’
We will play Cardiff City away in the quarter-finals.
