Mason Mount caught the eye in England’s comfortable victory over San Marino last night, and his output was highlighted by a remarkable stat that put him in the same bracket as Spanish legend Xavi.

Mount created eight chances from open play during his 45 minutes on the pitch at Wembley, including the assist for Raheem Sterling’s goal that put the Three Lions 3-0 up. According to Opta, no player since Xavi in 2008 has created more open-play chances in a World Cup qualifying fixture, and his nine set up in a victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina came over the course of 90 minutes in Murcia.

That game was shortly after Spain’s triumph at the European Championships, and kick-started their maiden victorious World Cup campaign. For Mount, the focus will be on helping fire an exciting generation of England internationals to glory at this summer’s Euros.

The 22-year-old certainly has the support of manager Gareth Southgate, who heaped praise on him after last night’s game, saying he ‘set the tone’ for England’s ultimately emphatic 5-0 victory.

As well as creating eight opportunities from open play, Mount was successful with all four dribbles he attempted, had a shot on target and a shot blocked, registered an 89 per cent pass completion rate (48/54 passes completed) and won five of the six duels he contested.

England’s next game is in Albania on Sunday, before they return to Wembley to play Poland on Wednesday.
