Chelsea's failure to make the most of our dominance against Burnley was to prove costly as the visitors grabbed a late equaliser in the third minute of injury-time.

Joao Pedro's early goal had given us the perfect start and we dominated the match for the opening 70 minutes, with Robert Sanchez rarely troubled.

However, Wesley Fofana's red card on 72 minutes for a second yellow card changed the dynamics of the match and Burnley snatched a dramatic equaliser from Zian Flemming in injury-time.

Five changes

After seven alterations at Hull City, it came as no surprise to see Rosenior make changes today.

There were five players to come back into the XI, as Trevoh Chalobah, Malo Gusto, Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez and Joao Pedro all returned.

Gusto started the game at left-back, with Marc Cucurella out injured, while Estevao Willian also missed out due to a hamstring issue he felt in training on Friday.

The Blues didn't have to wait long to make the breakthrough as with just four minutes on the clock, a superb through ball by Moises Caicedo picked out the run of Pedro Neto on the left flank and his low cross was met by Joao Pedro. The Brazilian's initial effort appeared to have been saved by Martin Dubravka but the momentum of the shot and Joao Pedro saw the ball bundled into the goal.

Chelsea were completely dominant possession wise but Burnley still had a couple of early efforts, as Hannibal Mejbri had a tame shot saved and then former Blue Lesley Ugochukwu flashed a rising strike from a tight angle over and wide.

We enjoyed 77 per cent possession in the opening quarter and could have added to our tally, as Enzo Fernandez shot over the bar, Cole Palmer dropped a shoulder superbly before having an effort from just inside the box blocked, and the forward then struck a powerful effort which was heading for the bottom corner until the Burnley defender got his head in the way.

A set-piece seemed the most likely way for Burnley to trouble the Blues but when they were awarded a free-kick, Marcus Edwards shot comfortably wide from 25 yards.

It looked as though we were set for our second goal when Kyle Walker's poor touch allowed Palmer to run in behind but under pressure from his England team-mate, Cole's shot from 20 yards was well held by Dubravka.

Dominance continues

Palmer continued to be a threat as we entered the second half. He probably would have scored soon after the restart, when Joao Pedro released him, had Burnley defender Joe Worrall not made a last-ditch sliding tackle, where his follow through left Chelsea players asking for a penalty.

It was then roles reversed when Palmer passed to Joao Pedro and he had an effort blocked, before more brilliant play from Palmer saw the forward drive at the defence and slide in Neto, only for Burnley to get yet another block in.

Chelsea continued to remain patient as we dominated the ball, while not being troubled at the other end. But every time an opening was created, a Burnley defender was there to block. Next up to be denied was Caicedo from 20 yards.

Down to ten men

The dynamics of the game changed as we entered the final 20 minutes, though, when Fofana was sent off for a second bookable offence and the Blues went down to ten men. Palmer, who had earlier been holding his calf, was quickly replaced by Tosin.

Burnley, who had not troubled Chelsea in the second half up until this point, then had a good chance when the ball was laid back to Josh Laurent close to goal but the Blues recovered in time to deflect the shot and it ended up being an easy save for Sanchez.

An excellent run and low cross from Neto relieved some pressure and almost led to another Chelsea goal but Jorrel Hato's shot was sliced wide.

Burnley were starting to apply more pressure and Sanchez needed to palm away a dangerous cross, before Ashley Barnes had Blues fans worried with two minutes of normal time remaining when he had the roof of the net shaking with a header from James Ward-Prowse's free-kick.

And in the third minute of injury-time, Burnley drew level when another dangerous Ward-Prowse delivery was met by the head of Flemming and the ball beat Sanchez low to his right.

It could have been worse for the Blues as moments later from another Ward-Prowse corner but this time a header from Jacob Bruun Larsen hit the roof of the net.

There was still time for one last roll of the dice and when the ball fell to Liam Delap on the edge of the box, Blues fans thought they could have a dramatic late winner but his powerful first-time strike from the edge of the box went over the bar with what proved to be the last kick of the game.

What it means

Today's point means we have moved up to fourth but Manchester United in fifth now have a game in hand, which will take place on Monday night against Everton.

What's next

Next up for the Blues is a trip to Arsenal on Sunday 1 March.
