Braces from Jordan Henderson and Joao Pedro, plus a goal from Morgan Rogers, ensured the Blues emphatically returned to winning ways as we defeated Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.
On his home Chelsea debut, Henderson produced a decisive moment inside two minutes. Teed up by Cole Palmer, the veteran midfielder whipped a 20-yard shot home via the post. Then, 60 seconds later, he turned provider as Rogers collected a pass from Henderson and curled a shot home. It was the perfect start.
The two quick-fire goals enabled us to take control of the contest. There were no further goals in the first half, but our third of the afternoon arrived within a minute of the restart - Joao Pedro drilled a shot into the net after good work from Pedro Neto.
Bournemouth pulled a goal back through Evanilson, but it was only a momentary set-back as Joao Pedro netted his second and Henderson then completed a brace of his own with a wonderful 25-yard free kick.
A historic start
Alonso made three alterations to the side that started our last outing at Brentford. Josh Acheampong came into defence for Wesley Fofana, the returning Moises Caicedo started for the first time this season in midfield in place of Valentin Barco, and Joao Pedro came into the front line for Danny Welbeck.
A theme in the opening weeks of our season has been early goals. Yet even the most optimistic Blues supporter would not have envisaged a two-goal lead being established within three minutes.
The first was a wonderful strike from Henderson, who on his home Chelsea debut whipped an excellent shot across goal that bounced off the post on its way in. Palmer, fresh off signing a new contract, claimed the assist after an impressive run into Bournemouth territory.
From the restart, we immediately reclaimed possession and flooded forward. Neto first had an opportunity, denied by Djordje Petrovic, but we kept the ball alive around the Bournemouth box and Henderson clipped a pass to Rogers, who measured his shot into the far corner via a glancing Antonio Silva touch.
Just two minutes and 29 seconds were on the clock. We had never been two goals ahead as early in a Premier League game.
Settling down
In a strong position so early, Alonso's side were able to manage the tempo of the opening period. We didn't overcommit players forward but still maintained a threat in the final third.
Henderson came closest to extending our advantage in the first half, with a carefully guided shot from the edge of the box which drifted narrowly wide.
Bournemouth fashioned chances sporadically. Rayan had the clearest after he was put through on goal, but Emi Martinez produced a smart reaction save and then denied Ryan Christie's rebound attempt.
The Cherries forced the Argentinian into another stop late in the half. Silva this time glanced a header toward goal in the Chelsea box and Martinez had to get down well to save. It ensured we went into the break two goals ahead.
A fast restart
Our advantage widened within a minute of the restart. Bournemouth clearly had not learned their first-half lesson. Neto was instrumental to the goal as he got the better of Silva on the byline and squared for Joao Pedro, who powered his shot beyond Petrovic.
Bournemouth were not done, though, and five minutes later the Cherries pulled a goal back. It came from a near-post corner that caused a goal-mouth scramble following a flick-on. Caicedo attempted to halt the threat, but his clearance struck the foot of Evanilson and the ball ricocheted into the net.
The Blues suddenly came under pressure and Bournemouth attempted to capitalise. Yet we stayed composed and saw off the visitors' threat. In the 67th minute, we grabbed our fourth of the game.
It was a well-constructed goal as the ball was worked from back to front before Rogers knocked it out to Pep Chavarria. The Spaniard produced an excellent low cross that took out the Bournemouth back line and enabled Joao Pedro to side-foot home.
A fifth arrives
Four quickly became five – and Henderson was on the scoresheet once again. This time it came from a free-kick, won 25 yards out by Palmer, who stood off and watched as the midfielder whipped his attempt over the wall and beyond Petrovic's dive.
With the Blues having opened a commanding lead, Alonso turned to his bench. Caicedo and Joao Pedro, who were nursed back to fitness during the international break, headed off. On came Romeo Lavia and summer arrival Marco Palestra, who made his Chelsea debut after recovering from an injury of his own.
The time that remained passed without major incident. Estevao Willian and Danny Welbeck were introduced in the latter stages, as was Malo Gusto, but the game was firmly won by that point as Alonso's side coasted to an impressive victory.
