Since being elevated to work with the Chelsea first team at the turn of the year, Calum McFarlane has had the pleasure of witnessing Joao Pedro’s brilliance up close.

So far in 2026 the Brazilian has scored 13 goals in all competition and assisted a further five, while his spectacular bicycle kick earlier this week brought up the milestone of 20 Premier League goal involvements in his first full season in blue. He is just the sixth player to achieve that feat after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Eden Hazard, Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Cole Palmer. Feted company indeed.

McFarlane has explained why the 24-year-old’s success in a Chelsea shirt has come as no surprise to him.

‘I see his talent every day,’ he said.

‘I see what he's capable of in training. I see what he's capable of in Premier League matches and Champions League matches. Joao is a top, top talent.

‘He's scored some amazing goals this season. He brings a lot to the team. He's got a lot of talent.’

McFarlane also noted that the breadth of Joao Pedro’s ability means he is comfortable being used in different positions, even if it has been as a central striker that he has starred this calendar year.

‘At the moment, he's looking like he's most comfortable in the number nine position,’ said McFarlane.

‘But I think with his skill set and his talent and physicality, he can play in various role, so I wouldn't pigeonhole him to one. He’s capable of playing anywhere.’
