Southgate hopeful on injured Chelsea duo

Gareth Southgate has explained his decision to call up Mason Mount and Reece James for England’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers despite the pair missing Chelsea’s Champions League match at Juventus this week because of injuries, the Evening Standard reports.

Mount has sat out the Blues’ last two games while James had to be taken off during the first half in last weekend’s Premier League clash against Manchester City after appearing to suffer an ankle injury.

However, Southgate said the pair could be back in action when we host Southampton on Saturday in our final game before the international break.

‘Clearly they are still to appear for their clubs so there is an element of the unknown,’ said the England manager.

‘Our understanding is that Mason and Reece have a good chance for the weekend [against Southampton]. We’ll have to track that.

‘We don’t play until next Saturday so there is a bit of time and we will know more as the week progresses.’

The Three Lions lead Group I and visit Andorra on 9 October before hosting Hungary at Wembley the following Tuesday.

Glory beckons for Sturridge

Australian side Perth Glory have announced that former Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge is joining the club for the upcoming A-League season.

The 32-year-old has not played since his release by Turkish side Trabzonspor in March 2020 after he had been handed a four-month worldwide ban for breaching betting rules. He now hopes to revive his career in Western Australia.

‘It’s a fantastic opportunity to try a new challenge,’ said Sturridge, a member of Chelsea’s Double-winning side in 2010.

‘When the opportunity came about, it felt like the right thing to do, to take my talent somewhere where I can enjoy my football in a competitive league and try and help the team be as successful as they possibly can be.

‘I’m going to put my best foot forward, work hard and try and help the team win each game that comes by and then we’ll see where we end up when the season finishes.’

Sturridge is the second former Chelsea player to join Perth Glory after William Gallas who ended his career there in 2014.

Corinthians fan gets buzz for Willian

Willian may not have scored in his first two games since he returned to Corinthians but the former Chelsea star has already made a big impression on a supporter of the Brazilian club.

The Sun has shared a photograph of a Corinthians fan with a brand new haircut which features an amazing likeness of the former Blue.

According to the report, the unique cut is the work of creative hairstylist Well Barbeiro, who shared an image of his latest work on his Instagram account along with his other designs including images of other footballers' faces which he has crafted onto into his customers' hair.

Willian recently returned to Brazil to re-join his first professional club after mutually ending his contract at Arsenal after one season.
