Ferdinand on Tuchel’s attacking ‘conundrum’
Rio Ferdinand believes Thomas Tuchel has an issue with the Chelsea attack after his side failed to score for a second straight game in our 1-0 loss at Juventus on Wednesday but the BT Sport pundit is backing the German to find a solution, the Daily Mail reports.
Despite dominating possession in the Champions League encounter in Turin, the visitors were unable to muster a response to Federico Chiesa’s goal early in the second half as Juve’s defence snuffed out our attacking threat throughout a frustrating evening.
‘This is the conundrum Tuchel has to unpick,’ said Ferdinand after watching the Italian side limit the Blues to a single shot on goal.
‘He's had it all his own way. He hasn't been in a position where people are questioning his team.
'[However,] his front players didn't have the spark today.'
The former England defender still believes Tuchel will get the Blues back on track and hailed what he has done since he took charge of the club early this year.
‘I don't have any worries about Thomas Tuchel,’ he added. 'I think he's fabulous and he deserves all the time given what he's done with a Champions League-winning team.’
Chelsea reportedly interested in Torres
According to 90min.com, Chelsea are set to join the chase to sign Spain defender Pau Torres from Villarreal next year.
The stock of the 24-year-old has risen rapidly in recent months after he helped Villarreal win the Europa League final against Manchester United and then played for Spain as they reached the Euro 2020 semi-finals and won a silver medal at the Olympics in Japan.
‘The European champions are looking at new defensive options for 2022, which could see them make a move for two new centre-backs,’ stated the report.
‘Chelsea were in the market for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. While they were unable to strike a deal, the Blues remain keen on the Frenchman.
‘However, Torres is now another player they are tracking. The 24-year-old is one of the most highly-regarded defenders in Spain, and was the man Manchester United were considering moving for before Raphael Varane became available from Real Madrid.
‘Chelsea’s scouts have issued glowing reports on the player and Torres is now very much in their thinking.’
Willian opens up on Arsenal exit
Former Chelsea winger Willian has explained that he cut short his three-year deal with Arsenal and returned to Brazil because he was unhappy at the club, The Mirror reports.
Willian signed a lucrative deal with the Gunners as a free agent in 2020 but failed to find the excellent form he enjoyed during his successful seven-season spell with the Blues.
Speaking on Brazilian sports programme SBT Arena, the 33-year-old said it was his own decision to terminate the deal early and re-join Corinthians, the club where he made his professional debut as a teenager.
‘My year at Arsenal was a bit complicated. I really couldn’t adapt to the club. I wasn’t happy there,’ he said.
‘To make it very clear too, it wasn’t the club that wanted me to leave. I wanted to leave the club. I expressed my feeling, said I wasn’t happy.
‘I said I wanted to look elsewhere, another place to play. And so there was this decision to leave. There are things in life that money can’t buy, money doesn’t pay for. You have joy, happiness, peace, a solid family. I think this is the most important thing for me.
‘I studied some other opportunities, but I wanted to return to Corinthians, to my home, to be close to my family. It’s the club that projected me to the world, revealed me. The right time to come back was this.’
