James’ father on his son’s historic goal

Reece James’ father has told the Daily Mail he missed out on watching his son become the youngest Chelsea player to score in the Champions League because he was busy coaching his team in the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday.

While the 19-year-old was netting the equaliser in our thrilling 4-4 draw against Ajax at Stamford Bridge, Nigel James was 60 kilometres away in Gillingham, leading Hanworth Villa's Under-18 side to a surprise 3-2 victory over Gillingham in the first round of the competition.

‘There was about 10 minutes to go in our game and Gillingham were pushing for an equaliser when there was a large cheer in the stands,' said Nigel.

'I looked round and a load of our supporters were shouting to me that Reece had scored. I was so proud but I had to hold my concentration until the end.

'Thankfully, the boys held on and I left the other coaches in the dressing room to celebrate while one of the supporters allowed me to watch the end of Chelsea's game on their iPhone.'

Reflecting on his son’s proud moment, Nigel added: ‘You could see what it meant to Reece. He's been at Chelsea since he was six years old and when you have been with a club that long it's like family. A lot of passion came out in that celebration.

'I spoke to him on the phone after had left the ground and he was absolutely over the moon.'

Ajax keeper not surprised by Blues comeback

Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana has complimented Frank Lampard and his youthful Chelsea side and said he was not surprised to see them come from three goals down to earn a draw against the Dutch champions, Goal.com reports.

Speaking after the 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge, the Cameroonian had positive things to say about the Chelsea head coach.

‘I think he is doing really well. They are a good team and he is trying to play with young players. You see how fast they are. Especially in Amsterdam, the game was very tough for us,’ said the 23-year-old.

‘I think Lampard is doing really well. I am not really surprised [about their comeback]. I think for us, the important thing is us and we just tried to look at ourselves.’

While disappointed with the result, Onana felt the Dutch club had done themselves proud with their performance at the Bridge.

‘I think we are disappointed but, when you see the bigger picture, it is good to leave with a point here,’ he added.

‘It was not easy. It is not easy at all. We fought to the end. We didn’t lose. It was really important for us not to lose. We did it and I am really proud of the guys.

‘I think the way we fought together, it is not easy to run up and down with nine men. My team-mates were hard workers.

‘Even if we are playing with seven men then we will try and play our football because if we play their game, then it will be easier for them because they are more physical and stronger than us. So for us, it is more important to keep possession and to try to play but with nine it is not easy.’

Pedro linked with Fenerbahce move

The Daily Mail reports Turkish giants Fenerbahce are looking to sign Pedro on a free transfer next summer after his Chelsea contract expires.

Citing a report by Turkish publication Tavkim, the Mail states the Istanbul side are keen to bring in the Spaniard who has been at Stamford Bridge for five seasons.

‘The Spanish winger has been targeted by Fenerbahce's sporting director, Damien Comolli - former Liverpool and Tottenham chief,’ states the report.

‘It is reported that Comolli will sit down and hold talks with Pedro's agent in the near future.

‘The 32-year-old former Barcelona player will be allowed to talk to clubs over a potential free transfer in January.’
