Shearer on Lukaku
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer has praised the addition of our latest signing Romelu Lukaku.
Writing for the BBC, the pundit believes the 28-year-old will play a major role under Thomas Tuchel and could help the Blues challenge for the title.
‘Lukaku changes that because we know he will score goals,’ Shearer wrote. ‘He guarantees lots of them.
‘He is going to be a huge signing for them. He can be the difference. That’s how important he is.’
The striker joins the Blues after a successful spell in Italy where he established himself as one of the most lethal finishers in Europe. Last season in Serie A, the Belgian found the net 24 times and picked up 11 assists.
‘We are talking about one of the best strikers in the world,’ Shearer added. ‘At 28, he is at his peak and I think he has improved a lot since he left Manchester United for Inter Milan in 2019.
‘Lukaku is arriving at a club that has everything else in place to win a title.’
Murphy hails midfield duo
Football pundit Danny Murphy believes Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho will be key players if the Blues are to challenge for the Premier League title.
Speaking in a report that was repeated in the Metro, Murphy pointed out our strength in depth in key positions means we can contend for the title.
‘They have built some squad at Stamford Bridge and they are brimming with confidence,’ he said. ‘They ended last season by winning the Champions League and took that form into the game against Palace.
‘For Thomas Tuchel to make so many changes and for everyone to be at it right away was impressive.’
The Blues will now prepare for a second London derby in a week when we face Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
‘If Kante sits out a game as he did against Palace, Chelsea can call on two top internationals in Jorginho and Kovacic,’ he added. ‘That’s why Chelsea have to be taken seriously.’
Ferdinand praises Chalobah
Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has praised Trevoh Chalobah after his fantastic start to the season.
Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand also stated he has been massively impressed by the centre-back so far this season.
‘The big thing for me is Trevoh Chalobah,’ he said. ‘I watched him in the UEFA Super Cup game, I was massively impressed with him and the way he defended.
‘He had three or four big moments, defensively, when he pulled the hat out of the bag. He then comes up with a goal at the weekend.’
The centre-back is enjoying a run in the side under Tuchel at the moment, after impressing the boss throughout pre-season. Chalobah has been with Chelsea since the age of eight and played in the same youth team as the likes of Mason Mount, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi.
‘To see the emotion in a young player like that,’ Ferdinand added. ‘It just reinforces that this is still a beautiful game.
‘They have got a deep squad, that’s the thing with Chelsea. We talk about Manchester United’s array of talent but Chelsea are the same.’
