Melanie Leupolz believes the patience shown by Chelsea FC Women was key in clinching victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Continental League Cup on Tuesday evening.

The Blues dominated the game from the opening minute but we had to wait until the 70th minute to break the deadlock when Erin Cuthbert fired in to bring her tally to five goals this season.

German international Leupolz then doubled our advantage when she coolly converted from the spot after a goal-bound effort from Sophie Ingle was handled inside the penalty area.

‘We are really happy. It was a tough game but we expected it to be really hard,’ said Leupolz.

‘They were really good in one-on-one situations but we stayed patient and we waited until we had our chances.

‘We played them in pre-season and we won 6-1. We knew it wouldn’t be that easy this time around and we knew they were going to be really aggressive and make the pitch really small for us to play.

‘It was important for us to stay patient and wait for those chances to come.

‘We scored two goals and that was enough. We got the three points but now we will look forward, analyse the game and turn our focus to our game on Sunday.’

Leupolz and her team-mates will now concentrate their attentions on the next league action, with Everton visiting Kingsmeadow on Sunday.

The Toffees currently sit second in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League standings, having won four of their opening five fixtures.

Leupolz is expecting a tough encounter but the midfielder says the aim will be on securing all three points this weekend.

‘We have to make sure we recover well so we are fresh and ready to go for Everton on Sunday,' she added.

‘It will be a really difficult game. They have had a few games recently including the FA Cup final last weekend but we have to focus on ourselves.

‘We went out of the FA Cup against them so we want to do better this time against them and make sure we take the three points.’
